In his blog, Mr. Rosenberg reported on September 13 that, \u201c[T]he White House worked behind the scenes to stop EPA from issuing a hazard assessment of the cancer-causing chemical TCE [produced through the IRIS program] \u2014 and is working to effectively shut down the EPA\u2019s program for assessing the hazards of chemicals \u2014 the basis for setting and updating health standards for drinking water, air quality, and clean-up of contaminated soil.\u201d He notes that the move was obscured as it fell on the same day as the widely reported and controversial decision by the administration to withdraw a new EPA health standard for ozone smog.
