(Beyond Pesticides<\/em>, May 31, 2007) Adding to the weight of the evidence tying pesticide use to Parkinson\u2019s disease, a study by University of Aberdeen researchers has found that pesticide exposure increases the likelihood of developing the disease. The researchers also found that the risk factor for developing Parkinson\u2019s increases with high levels of pesticide exposure.<\/font><\/p>\n

The European Commission funded study<\/a> indicates that both pesticides and traumatic head injury play a causative role in Parkinson\u2019s disease. The researchers found that exposure to low levels of pesticides increases the likelihood of being affected by the disease by 1.09 times compared to those with no reported exposure. Those exposed to high levels of pesticides were 1.39 times more likely to develop the disease.<\/font><\/p>\n

The study is one of the largest conducted to date of genetic, environmental and occupational risk factors for Parkinson\u2019s disease and other degenerative parkinsonian syndromes. The researchers identified 959 cases of parkinsonism, 767 of which are diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s, and 1,989 control cases in Scotland, Italy, Sweden, Romania and Malta. Data on exposure was self-reported by the subjects.<\/font><\/p>\n

We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. By forging ties with governments, nonprofits, and people who rely on these natural resources, we reduce the need for unnecessary pesticide use and protect public health and the environment. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
