So, ensuring that the <strong>public trusts<\/strong> the organic food label <strong>is critical<\/strong> to the growth of organic. Please join our <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/SaveOurOrganic\/\">Save Our Organic<\/a> campaign to defend the organic food label from USDA changes. Unfortunately, the organic label <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will be undermined by changes that <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/AMSv1.0\/getfile?dDocName=STELPRDC5106584\">USDA announced on its website on March 6.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/action.beyondpesticides.org\/images\/SaveOurOrganicIntegrity.jpg\" width=\"315\" height=\"348\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"7\" vspace=\"7\" \/>These changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"square\"><strong>Reduce<\/strong> the rigor of the ongoing decision making process on allowed synthetic materials in organic production;<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\"><strong>Take away<\/strong> transparency in the decision making process;<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\"><strong>Limit<\/strong> public participation in policies and procedures governing organic practices and standards;<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\"><strong>Undermine<\/strong> the responsibility of the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) and organic community to advise the Secretary of Agriculture on organic issues;<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\"><strong>Change<\/strong> organic policy making from one driven by the public process to one controlled by USDA, which can choose to dismiss critical issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trust in the organic label over the last 20 years has been built on principles of collaboration among the stakeholder groups (farmers, consumers, and producers) and USDA. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Because of the democratic and open decision making process, public trust in the organic label has grown rapidly<\/span> along with the tremendous growth of the organic market. We want this to continue!<\/p>\n<p>Congress established the NOSB, bringing together the diverse interests in the organic community, to adopt recommendations on policy and what materials are allowed in organic production. The founders, who established Beyond Pesticides (originally as National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides) as a nonprofit membership organization in 1981, felt that without the existence of such an organized, national network, local, state and national pesticide policy would become, under chemical industry pressure, increasingly unresponsive to public health and environmental concerns. Beyond Pesticides believes that people must have a voice in decisions that affect them directly. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
