These systemic pesticides, which \u00a0move through the plant\u2019s vascular system and express themselves through pollen and nectar, \u00a0include <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=39\">imidacloprid<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=85\">acetamiprid<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=121\">clothianidin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=140\">dinotefuran<\/a>, nithiazine, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=316\">thiacloprid<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=289\">thiamethoxam<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/pollinators\/nolongeraBIGmystery.pdf\">A growing body of science<\/a> has implicated neonicotinoids, which are applied to or \u00a0incorporated into seeds for agricultural, ornamental \u00a0and garden plants, as a key factor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=5450\">recent global bee die-offs<\/a>. Beekeepers across the country reported losses of 40-90 percent of their bees last winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoney bees and other pollinators play a critical role in agricultural systems,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vermontlaw.edu\/Our_Faculty\/Faculty_Directory\/Laurie_Ristino.htm\">Laurie Ristino<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vermontlaw.edu\/Academics\/Environmental_Law_Center\/Institutes_and_Initiatives\/About.htm\">Center for Agriculture and Food Systems<\/a> and VLS associate professor of law. \u201cProtecting their health and safety is a reflection of Vermont Law School\u2019s commitment to the environment and CAFS\u2019 mission to support sustainable food and agricultural systems. We hope more will follow our lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic day for pollinators,\u201d said Larissa Walker, Pollinator Campaign Director at Center for Food Safety. \u201cFor the first time, a major university is taking steps to provide a sanctuary for the bees. Pollinators are too important to wait for the situation to get worse. We applaud Vermont Law School and thank them for their leadership. Last year, Beyond Pesticides, Center for Food Safety, and others<a class=\" pdflink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/pollinators\/documents\/NeonicLawsuitPR3.21.13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> filed a lawsuit against EPA<\/a> on its continued registration of these chemicals. The groups are also working to pressure on lawmakers in Congress to take action to protect pollinators with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=11237\">Saving America\u2019s Pollinator Act<\/a>, H.R. 2692, introduced by Representatives John Conyers (D-MI) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), is gaining support in the House.
