This national conference will be held April 3-4, 2009 at the Century Center in Carrboro, NC. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.<\/p>\n<p>The Forum will begin with an optional tour of <a href=\"http:\/\/\">Piedmont Biofuels<\/a> in Pittsboro, NC on Friday afternoon at 1:00pm. Piedmont Biofuels is a cooperative that runs a research farm and sustainable biodiesel production facility, manufacturing local fuel out of waste vegetable oil. Giant insect puppets from their &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.paperhand.org\/insect.htm\">I am an Insect<\/a>&#8221; production will pay Forum participants a visit Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Keynote speakers at this year\u2019s conference include: Jim Hightower, national radio commentator and author of Swim Against the Current: Even a dead fish can go with the flow; Baldemar Velasquez, social justice leader and president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC); and, Philip and Alice Shabecoff, authors of <em>Poisoned Profits: The toxic assault on our children<\/em>. Mr. Shabecoff also founded Greenwire and served as chief environmental correspondent for <em>The New York Times<\/em>. Scheduled for Saturday morning, the <em>Growing a Fair, Local, Organic Food System<\/em> panel will include talks by an organic dairy farmer, an organic produce marketer and individuals involved with university and non-profit outreach programs to grow organic production in North Carolina and around the country. In the afternoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=1318\">university and government scientists<\/a> will present the latest pesticide research as part of the <em>Cutting Edge Pesticide Science: Linking exposure to health effects<\/em> panel.<\/p>\n<p>Workshops will include: Schools and Daycare: Creating a healthy learning environment; Protecting Waterways, Health and the Environment; Farmworker Organizing; Organic Land Management: Lawns, gardens and open spaces; Progressive Policies: Global to local; Farmworker Health Training; a Carrboro Farmer\u2019s Market Tour; and more.<\/p>\n<p>Practical information, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\/local_info\/index.htm\">maps<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\/local_info\/index.htm#shuttle\">shuttle information<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\/lodging\/index.htm\">lodging<\/a> recommendations, as well as a complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\/speakers\/index.htm\">speaker list<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\/programs\/index.htm\">schedule of events<\/a> and online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\/brochures\/index.htm\">registration<\/a>, are posted on the Forum webpage. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
