\u201cHi, my name is _______ and I\u2019m calling to urge President Obama to protect bees from toxic pesticides immediately to protect our food supply and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The administration is being lobbied by Bayer, Syngenta and other big chemical companies to withhold \u00a0action on pesticides, but President Obama needs to hear directly from \u00a0the public \u00a0to know that we\u2019re invested in this issue and will support his decision to direct his administration to protect bees from pesticides.<\/p>\n

Industry has already launched an attack against preliminary recommendations from the task force. The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) updated federal guidelines<\/a> to require pollinator friendly plantings without the use of systemic pesticides at federal buildings, but AmericanHort and the Society of American Florists has called the proposal<\/a> \u201cnot a viable recommendation.\u201d Despite recent research showing the value of pesticide-free pollinator habitat<\/a>, industry continues to jeopardize pollinator populations.<\/p>\n

As the scientific record increasingly identifies \u00a0neonicotinoids as key contributors to declining pollinator health, the \u00a0pesticide industry has \u00a0attempted to stymie free speech<\/a>. In early March, Bayer lost a lawsuit that sought \u00a0to silence Friends of the Earth Germany for its \u00a0efforts to speak out against the use of thiacloprid, a harmful neonicotinoid insecticide not covered under the EU suspension<\/a> of these chemicals.<\/p>\n

At the same time, \u00a0industry is investing heavily in attempting to spin the pollinator crisis through outreach and PR campaigns such as \u201cBayer Bee Care Tour<\/a>\u201d and \u00a0their latest \u201cFeed a Bee Initiative<\/a>,\u201d which encourages people \u00a0to increase habitat by planting seeds or plants without any warning that they may contain the company’s neonicotinoids. Non-profits like Beyond Pesticides and our allies have the resources<\/a> \u00a0that assist with the development of \u00a0pesticide-free pollinator habitat and a directory<\/a> to find organic seed and nursery stock and suppliers that don’t utilize \u00a0systemic chemicals that make the whole plant poisonous to bees.<\/p>\n

With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
