Widely-used neonicotinoids, which as systemic chemicals move through a plant\u2019s vascular system and express poison through pollen, nectar, and guttation droplets, have been identified in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/pollinators\/research.php\">multiple \u00a0peer-reviewed studies<\/a> \u00a0and by beekeepers \u00a0as the major contributing factor in bee decline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/California_Wildflowers_3386132276.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16773\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/California_Wildflowers_3386132276-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"California_Wildflowers_(3386132276)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/California_Wildflowers_3386132276-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/California_Wildflowers_3386132276-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The study, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.est.5b03459\"><em>Neonicotinoid Residues in Wildflowers, A Potential Route of Chronic Exposure for Bees<\/em><\/a>, discovered neonicotinoid insecticides in wildflowers, including Hogweed and Poppy pollen (up to 86ppb and 64ppb, respectively). The study\u2019s authors \u00a0found higher concentrations of neonicotinoids in wild flowers in field margins than in Oilseed rape flowers in the adjacent neonicotinoid treated crop \u2014 on average 15ppb vs. 3ppb. \u00a0 They also found that more than 97% of the neonicotinoids being brought into the hive by honey bees are from wildflowers, while only 3% are \u00a0from the crop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/02\/neonics-harm-bees-brain-cells-according-to-researchers\/\">Researchers<\/a> have found \u00a0that chronic exposure to neonicotinoids increases neuronal vulnerability to mitochondrial dysfunction in the bumblebee. In other words, these pesticides damage the brain cells of bees. Exposed bees will have greater difficulty, for instance, in recognizing the smell of a flower, or how to find their way back to their colony. In June 2015, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1226861515000813\">researchers demonstrated \u00a0<\/a>that honey bees exposed to \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pname=imidacloprid.php\">imidacloprid<\/a>, a toxic neonic, are more susceptible to heat shock. Researchers have also found that bees can become \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/04\/research-finds-bees-prefer-foods-treated-with-bee-killing-insecticides\/\">addicted to neonicotinoids<\/a> \u00a0in the same way that humans can become addicted to cigarettes. More research can be found on Beyond Pesticides\u2019 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/pollinators\/research.php\"><em>What the Science Shows<\/em><\/a> \u00a0page, where studies are listed to highlight the impact of pesticides on these organisms.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there is evidence that the toxic chemicals affect \u00a0other pollinators and beneficial insects as well. \u00a0Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Minnesota presented some of the first evidence <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/02\/new-research-links-bee-killing-insecticide-to-monarch-butterfly-deaths\/\">linking these bee-killing insecticides to monarch butterfly deaths<\/a>. The study found that milkweed plants, which monarch butterflies need to survive, may also retain neonicotinoids from nearby plants, making milkweed toxic to monarchs. Environmentalists, beekeepers and activists are increasingly frustrated with the use of these toxic chemicals, as it has been found that neonicotinoid-treated seeds <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/09\/study-finds-no-benefit-to-bee-toxic-neonic-use\/\">do not reduce crop damage from pests<\/a>, and that the use of neonicotinoid seed treatments, which are intended to decrease the use of pesticides, can actually increase the necessity of these toxic chemicals by <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/07\/neonicotinoids-harm-beneficial-predatory-insects-through-secondary-poisoning\/\">killing off natural, beneficial insect predators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The implications of the study findings only strengthen the need for meaningful policy change on the federal level. \u00a0<em>Saving America\u2019s Pollinators Act<\/em> \u00a0requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to suspend the registration of all neonicotinoid insecticides that are registered for use in seed treatment, soil application, or foliar treatment on bee attractive plants, trees and cereals until EPA has fully determined that these toxic chemicals do not cause unreasonable adverse effects on pollinators. Let\u2019s \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/pollinators\/index.php\">BEE Protective<\/a> \u00a0and support a shift away from the use of these toxic chemicals by encouraging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/organicfood\/index.php\">organic methods<\/a> \u00a0and \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/lawn\/index.php\">sustainable land management practices<\/a> \u00a0in your home, campus, or community.<\/p>\n<p>Neonicotinoids are undoubtedly highly toxic to honey bees, and EPA acknowledges this fact. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/09\/despite-evidence-of-harm-and-lack-of-need-usda-supports-unrestricted-use-of-bee-toxic-pesticides\/\">little is being done at the federal level<\/a> to protect bees and other pollinators from these pesticides. With unlimited resources behind them, the chemical industry \u2014the pesticide manufacturers, landscaping, horticultural and agricultural trade groups, have all come out to deflect attention away from pesticides as a major culprit in pollinator decline. Widely-used neonicotinoids, which as systemic chemicals move through a plant\u2019s vascular system and express poison through pollen, nectar, and guttation droplets, have been identified in multiple \u00a0peer-reviewed studies \u00a0and by beekeepers \u00a0as the major contributing factor in bee decline. The study, titled Neonicotinoid Residues in Wildflowers, A Potential Route of Chronic Exposure for Bees, discovered neonicotinoid insecticides in wildflowers, including Hogweed and Poppy pollen (up to 86ppb and 64ppb, respectively). The study\u2019s authors \u00a0found higher concentrations of neonicotinoids in wild flowers in field margins than in Oilseed rape flowers in the adjacent neonicotinoid treated crop \u2014 on average 15ppb vs. 3ppb. \u00a0 They also found that more than 97% of the neonicotinoids being brought into the hive by honey bees are from wildflowers, while only 3% are \u00a0from the crop. Researchers have found \u00a0that chronic exposure to neonicotinoids increases neuronal vulnerability to mitochondrial dysfunction in the bumblebee.
