Although there is a litany of scientific literature that highlights the link between pesticide exposure and childhood illness, this study is one of few that examines the relationship between residential exposures to agricultural pesticides via crop density and adverse health outcomes, and may serve as a basis for further investigation into childhood cancer rates in areas where agricultural pesticides are highly used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/pesticidespray.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16780\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/pesticidespray-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"pesticidespray\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/pesticidespray-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/pesticidespray.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The study, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehjournal.net\/content\/pdf\/s12940-015-0070-3.pdf\">Agricultural crop density and the risk of childhood cancer in the Midwestern United States: an ecologic study<\/a>, \u00a0was published in the journal <em>Environmental Health<\/em>. Using crop density as a surrogate for residential exposure to agricultural pesticides, the study linked county-level agricultural census data and cancer incidence data for children between the ages 0 to 4 in six Midwestern states and found evidence of an association between childhood cancer incidence and the production of crops such as dry beans, oats, and sugar beets. Researchers found statistically significant exposure-response relationships for dry beans and total leukemias and acute lymphoid leukemias, oats and acute myeloid leukemias, and sugar beets and total leukemias. State-level analyses discovered additional positive associations for total leukemia and central nervous system (CNS) tumors. While researchers were not able to examine specific pesticides used in these regions, they cited <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=7\">atrazine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=37\">glyphosate<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=17\">2,4-D<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=46\">MCPA<\/a> as some of the most highly-used chemicals during the study period.<\/p>\n<p>The link between adverse health outcomes in children and pesticide exposure is well-documented. <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/09\/harvard-meta-analysis-ties-childhood-cancer-to-pesticide-use\/\">A recent Harvard study<\/a> found that residential exposure to indoor insecticides in and around a child\u2019s home is linked to increased risk of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. An <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/10\/yale-study-links-prenatal-pesticide-exposure-to-tremors-in-children\/\">investigation by Yale University researchers<\/a> found that prenatal exposure to the widely used agricultural pesticide \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=17\">chlorpyrifos<\/a> \u00a0is linked to tremors in childhood. An <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/08\/childhood-development-hurt-by-preconception-exposure-to-environmental-stressors\/\">article published in in the Endocrine Society\u2019s journal \u00a0<em>Endocrinology<\/em><\/a> found that parental exposure to environmental stressors, such as pesticides, before a child is conceived can alter the way genes are expressed in the mother and father, ultimately harming the child\u2019s health when those genes are passed down to the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Pesticides advocates eating organic through its \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/organicfood\/conscience\/\">Eating with a Conscience<\/a> \u00a0website because of the environmental and health benefits to consumers, workers, and rural families.
