Read below to find out why now, more than ever, it\u2019s important to go organic, and how you can combat the shortcomings of conventional agriculture with an organic Thanksgiving Day feast.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nNow, more than ever, it\u2019s important to go organic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The most widely used weedkiller, glyphosate, has been classified as a probable carcinogen to humans, based on laboratory animal studies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.php?pesticideid=37\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16997\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/ThanksgivingHome-300x111.jpg\" alt=\"ThanksgivingHome\" width=\"373\" height=\"138\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/ThanksgivingHome-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/ThanksgivingHome.jpg 629w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/>Glyphosate<\/a>, produced and sold as Roundup by Monsanto, is touted as a \u201clow toxicity\u201d chemical and \u201csafer\u201d than other chemicals by EPA and industry and is widely used in food production and on lawns, gardens, parks, and children\u2019s playing fields. However, IARC\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/03\/glyphosate-classified-carcinogenic-by-international-cancer-agency-group-calls-on-u-s-to-end-herbicides-use-and-advance-alternatives\/\">recent classification<\/a> of glyphosate as a Group 2A \u201cprobable\u201d carcinogen finds that glyphosate is anything but safe. <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/03\/glyphosate-classified-carcinogenic-by-international-cancer-agency-group-calls-on-u-s-to-end-herbicides-use-and-advance-alternatives\/\">According to IARC<\/a>, Group 2A means that the chemical is probably carcinogenic to humans based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. The agency also notes that glyphosate caused DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells. Further, epidemiologic studies have found that exposure to glyphosate is significantly associated with an increased risk of non-Hodgkin\u2019s Lymphoma (NHL).<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Genetically Engineered (GE) crops and herbicide-resistant weeds are increasing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/genetic-engineering\/overview\">2,4-D Enlist Duo \u00ae,<\/a> a new 2,4-D and glyphosate formulated product to be exclusively used on GE 2,4-D tolerant crops, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2014\/10\/epa-approves-enlist-duo-opens-gate-to-new-wave-of-ge-woes\/\">was registered<\/a> in October 2014. In response to Enlist Duo\u2019s registration, new 2,4-D tolerant crops were approved for U.S. cultivation by USDA in <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/04\/epas-expansion-of-24-d-enlist-duo-challenged\/\">April 2015<\/a>. Over 70% of all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are altered to be herbicide-tolerant. Increased planting of herbicide-resistant GE crops has led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=8239\">dramatic increase in herbicide use<\/a>. The over use of herbicide-resistant crops has also led to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=8505\">super weeds<\/a>,&#8221; and the destruction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=10022\">pollinator habitat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gmoinside.org\/launch-thanksgiving\/\">According to GMO Inside<\/a>, some common GE foods used during Thanksgiving include: Campbell\u2019s Tomato Soup, Wesson Canola Oil, Bruce\u2019s Yams, Hershey Milk Chocolate, Pepperidge Farm Crackers, Kraft Classic Ranch Dressing, Rice-a-Roni chicken flavored rice, Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce, and Kraft\u2019s Stove Top Stuffing.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Appropriate responses and protective measures by \u00a0federal agencies are limited at best, especially when it comes to consumer health, pollinator health and agricultural worker protections.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><u>Consumer Safety<\/u><\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2014\/11\/fda-fails-to-test-for-residues-of-common-pesticides-on-food\/\">2014 Government Accountability (GAO) report<\/a>, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not test food for several commonly used pesticides with established tolerance levels \u2014including glyphosate, one of the most commonly used pesticides in the U.S. This and other disturbing findings documented in GAO\u2019s report, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-15-38\">Food Safety: FDA and USDA Should Strengthen Pesticide Residue Monitoring Programs and Further Disclose Monitoring Limitations<\/a>, sounds an alarm that GAO initially sounded \u00a0in the 1980\u2019s in several reports that identify shocking limitations of \u00a0FDA\u2019s monitoring of \u00a0pesticide residue violations in food.<\/p>\n<p><u>Pollinator Health<\/u><\/p>\n<p>On May 19, 2015, \u00a0the White House released its <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/05\/white-house-plan-does-little-to-take-the-sting-out-of-pollinator-declines\/\">much awaited plan for protecting American pollinators<\/a>, which identified key threats, but fell short of recommendations submitted by Beyond Pesticides, beekeepers, and others who stress that pollinator protection begins with strong regulatory action and suspension of bee-toxic pesticides. A major component of the federal plan is the creation and stewardship of habitat and forage for pollinators. Although well-intentioned, the Strategy ultimately works at cross-purposes by encouraging habitat, but continuing to allow systemic pesticides that contaminate plants ssand causing indiscriminate poisoning of pollinators. Without restrictions on the use of neonicotinoids, pollinator habitats \u00a0are pesticide-contaminated and provide no real safe-haven for bees and other pollinators.<\/p>\n<p><u>Farmworker Protection<\/u><\/p>\n<p>On September 28, 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.epa.gov\/pesticide-worker-safety\/agricultural-worker-protection-standard-revisions\">finally released<\/a> its new regulation regarding farmworker pesticide safety, revising the Agricultural Worker Protection Standards (WPS), which are designed to provide protections from pesticide exposure to farmworkers and their families. <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/09\/epa-releases-long-awaited-revisions-to-worker-protection-standards\/\">Farm work is demanding and dangerous physical labor<\/a>. As the scientific literature confirms, farmworkers, their families, and their communities face extraordinary risks from pesticide exposures. Application and pesticide drift result in dermal, inhalation, and oral exposures that are typically underestimated. In Beyond Pesticides\u2019 comments to EPA, Beyond Pesticides \u00a0made clear that the exemption, incorporated in WPS, for farmworkers that results in their \u00a0children&#8217;s exposure to dangerous chemicals is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can you combat the shortcomings of conventional agriculture? Go Organic. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our food choices have a direct effect on the health of our environment and those who grow and harvest what we eat. \u00a0 <strong>That\u2019s why food labeled organic is the right choice<\/strong>. In addition to serious health questions linked to actual residues of toxic pesticides on the food we eat, our food buying decisions support or reject hazardous agricultural practices, protection of farmworkers and farm families, and stewardship of the earth. USDA organic certification is the only system of food labeling that is subject to independent public review and oversight, ensuring that \u00a0the \u00a0toxic, synthetic pesticides used in chemical-intensive \u00a0agriculture are replaced by management practices focused on soil biology, biodiversity, and plant health. This eliminates commonly used toxic chemicals in the production and processing of food that is not labeled organic&#8211;pesticides that contaminate our water and air, hurt biodiversity, harm <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/eating-with-a-conscience\/farmworkers\">farmworkers<\/a>, and kill bees, birds, fish and other wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>To help better explain the urgent need for a major shift to organic food consumption, Beyond Pesticides has developed its \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/eating-with-a-conscience\/overview\">Eating with a Conscience<\/a> database, which evaluates the impacts on the environment and farmworkers of the toxic chemicals allowed for use on major food crops<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the majority of common Thanksgiving products can easily be substituted with organic counterparts. Canned yams, for instance, often contain GE ingredients, but can be replaced by fresh organic yams. Consider substituting GE cranberry sauce with <a href=\"http:\/\/cookforgood.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/21\/cost-and-flavor-for-cranberries-fresh-frozen-and-pre-made-sa.html\">home-made jellies made with organic cranberries<\/a> and fair trade sugar. Organic jellied cranberries, such as Tree of Life or Grown Right, are fast alternatives. Finally, pre-made stuffing, like Kraft\u2019s Stove Top stuffing, can \u00a0be replaced with homemade stuffing or organic stuffing mix from Arrowhead. Simply Organic has tons of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplyorganic.com\/store.php?Screen=recipes\">organic recipes<\/a> posted to their website if you need more ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The turkey is the symbol of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. However, turkeys are often fed grains treated with pesticides, medicated with antibiotics, and engorged with steroids and hormones. Additionally, turkeys are often fed an inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen, which is used to promote growth and for pigmentation. In order to avoid all these, your best bet is to invest in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/organic-agriculture\/buying-organic-products\">organic free-range turkey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the organic label dramatically increases protection for \u00a0consumers and agricultural workers from exposure to toxic pesticides, it also creates important benefits for environmental restoration. Research from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rodaleinstitute.org\/\">Rodale Institute\u2019s<\/a> Farming Systems Trial \u00ae (FST) has revealed that organic, regenerative agriculture actually has the potential to lessen the impacts of climate change.
