The department, known as Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety, authorized the approval of the pesticide, which is an insecticide in \u00a0the chemical class \u00a0<em>butenolides<\/em>. Bayer Crop Sciences, the creator of flupyradifurone, touts the insecticide as a \u201csafe\u201d alternative to neonicotinoids (neonics), although both neonics and butenolides are systemic, persistent, and acutely toxic to adult honey bees. Already launched in the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, advocates are pointing to the hasty nature of flupyradifurone\u2019s approval and the lack of scientific research supporting its use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Gary-Tate-Riverside-CA-Honey-Bee-taking-flight-Riverside-Ca-300x260.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16232\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Gary-Tate-Riverside-CA-Honey-Bee-taking-flight-Riverside-Ca-300x260-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"Gary-Tate-Riverside-CA-Honey-Bee-taking-flight-Riverside-Ca-300x260\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a>Flupyradifurone, marketed as \u201cSivanto prime\u201d in Europe, is approved for use in the EU on sucking pests that feed on fruits and vegetables as well as specialty crops such as hops.  \u00a0It is also approved for use in seed coatings. The chemical is neurotoxic and can inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the nervous system. Neonicotinoids, widely \u00a0criticized for their harmful effects on bees, \u00a0affect the nervous system in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>Matthias Haas, Ph.D., Global Project Manager at Bayer CropScience <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cropscience.bayer.com\/en\/Media\/Press-Releases\/2015\/European-Commission-approves-flupyradifurone.aspx\">says,<\/a> \u201cIt combines efficacy and convenience for the grower with excellent safety characteristics and will lead to better quality of produce. When applied at the proposed label rates, Sivanto prime is not associated with any adverse effects on honey bees and bumble bees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the European Commission voted to place a moratorium on three bee-killing neonics. Unfortunately, big agriculture has found legal loopholes in the form of exemptions and nonregulation to continue the use of neonics.<\/p>\n<p>Bee-friendly groups are asking scientists to look at the long-term and synergistic effects of butenolides, so as not to unknowingly place harmful insecticides on the market. This request is not baseless, as it follows the Guidance Document that accompanied the moratorium two years ago. The document addressed proper risk assessment concerning pesticides and bees. Martin Dermine, Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe\u2019s bee expert, spoke to the disregard of risk assessment in the EU, \u201cIn the meantime, neonicotinoid pesticides like sulfoxaflor and now flupyradifurone are being authorised without a proper risk assessment and despite EFSA\u2019s comments either on their toxicity or on the lack of data to assess their safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/01\/new-pesticide-to-be-marketed-amid-misleading-claims-that-it-is-safer-for-bees\/\">flupyradifurone was registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)<\/a> in January of this year. EPA \u00a0believes flupyradifurone is less toxic than current insecticides on the market, including neonicotinoids. In fact, comparing toxicity values of flupyradifurone and imidacloprid, flupyradifurone is less toxic by the oral route (LD<sub>50<\/sub> \u00a03.4ug\/bee) than imidacloprid (LD<sub>50<\/sub> \u00a00.004ug\/bee). EPA believes that in spite of the acute oral toxicity, flupyradifurone has no measurable impact on bee colonies and that there is \u201ccompelling evidence\u201d in the chemical\u2019s favor. The agency has concluded, \u00a0\u201cWhile the <strong>acute oral toxicity study indicates that flupyradifurone is highly \u00a0toxic to individual adult honey bees<\/strong>, longer-term laboratory-based studies of both larval and adult bees show no adverse effects up to the highest dietary concentration tested.\u201d \u00a0Environmental groups are asking that EPA and other foreign agencies look more carefully at \u00a0the long-term effects.<\/p>\n<p>When taking action against \u00a0bee-killing insecticides like butenolides and neonics, legislators need to know that bees, butterflies, and other pollinators need improved \u00a0protections from pesticides, given the sharp declines in the population of \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/05\/honey-bee-losses-worsen-congressional-hearing-ignores-pesticide-effects\/\">managed <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/11\/native-bees-found-to-have-residues-of-pesticides-linked-to-their-steep-decline\/\">native<\/a> bees, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2014\/07\/bird-population-declines-linked-to-neonicotinoid-pesticides-adding-to-previous-science\/\">birds<\/a>, \u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/02\/new-research-links-bee-killing-insecticide-to-monarch-butterfly-deaths\/\">butterflies<\/a>. The department, known as Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety, authorized the approval of the pesticide, which is an insecticide in \u00a0the chemical class \u00a0butenolides. Bayer Crop Sciences, the creator of flupyradifurone, touts the insecticide as a \u201csafe\u201d alternative to neonicotinoids (neonics), although both neonics and butenolides are systemic, persistent, and acutely toxic to adult honey bees. Already launched in the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, advocates are pointing to the hasty nature of flupyradifurone\u2019s approval and the lack of scientific research supporting its use. Flupyradifurone, marketed as \u201cSivanto prime\u201d in Europe, is approved for use in the EU on sucking pests that feed on fruits and vegetables as well as specialty crops such as hops. \u00a0It is also approved for use in seed coatings. The chemical is neurotoxic and can inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the nervous system.
