Plankton species were adversely \u00a0affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=121\">clothianidin<\/a>, a neonicotinoid, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=113\">chlorantraniliprole<\/a>, but they recovered after concentrations of the chemicals decreased.<\/p>\n<p>Koichi Goka, Ph.D., a senior researcher at the institute, said nymphs living near the soil are particularly vulnerable to toxic chemicals, according to <em>The Asahi Shimbun<\/em>. \u201cThe density of insecticidal components in the water drops quickly after they are dissolved,\u201d Goka said. \u201cBut such components long remain in the soil. Nymphs at the bottom of water could have been affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Goka is calling for more testing in outdoor facilities to assess the risks of agricultural chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Dragonflies and other pollinators are under constant threat from the widespread use of pesticides. A study published in March 2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2016\/03\/multiple-pesticides-detected-in-poisoned-bees\/\">found over 50 different types of pesticides in honey bees<\/a>, including neonicotinoids, pyrethroids, and fipronil, while investigating over 70 honey bee poisoning events. A 2013 study published in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em> found that pesticide use has sharply <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2013\/06\/study-finds-pesticides-reduce-biodiversity-in-aquatic-ecosystems\/\">reduced the regional biodiversity of stream invertebrates<\/a>, such as mayflies and dragonflies, thus posing a long-term threat to important ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Plan to attend \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/forum\"><em>Cultivating Community and Environmental Health, \u00a0<\/em>the 34<sup>th<\/sup> \u00a0National Pesticide Forum<\/a>, April 15-16, 2016 in Portland, ME to discuss pollinators and other local and national environmental concerns.  \u00a0Jonathan Lundgren, Ph.D., a senior USDA entomologist \u00a0will join other top scientists and leaders who have stood up to protect human and environmental health, despite facing industry backlash and scientific suppression. Dr. Lundgren\u2019s research on the harm that \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/bee-protective-pollinators-and-pesticides\/chemicals-implicated\">neonicotinoids<\/a> \u00a0pose to monarch butterflies reflects a \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/bee-protective-pollinators-and-pesticides\/what-the-science-shows\">growing scientific consensus<\/a> \u00a0that these chemicals present significant risks to declining pollinator populations.
