Safer Choice uses the technical expertise of its DfE workgroup of EPA scientists to compare ingredients in the same functional class and thereby identify those ingredients with the lowest hazard profile. Garvin. \u201cProducts that carry the Safer Choice label have been carefully evaluated by EPA scientists to ensure they contain ingredients that are safer for both humans and environmental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a0Safer Choice Standard \u00a0and the \u00a0Criteria for Safer Chemical Ingredients \u00a0are protective and address a broad range of potential toxicological effects, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive or developmental toxicants;<\/li>\n<li>persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals;<\/li>\n<li>systemic or internal organ toxicants;<\/li>\n<li>asthmagens;<\/li>\n<li>sensitizers; and<\/li>\n<li>chemicals on authoritative lists of chemicals of concern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Safer Choice screens all ingredients for chemicals that may present serious health or environmental effects. This screening includes ingredients used in small percentages, like fragrances and dyes. Some of the chemicals of most potential concern in products are those used in small concentrations. Chemicals of concern include sensitizers, carcinogens, and environmentally toxic and persistent compounds. In addition, Safer Choice products must display one of four symbols that represent the level of concern based on Safer Choice criteria.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17837\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/green-circle.gif\" alt=\"green circle\" width=\"21\" height=\"20\" \/> \u00a0Green circle<\/strong>: The chemical has been verified to be of low concern based on experimental and modeled data.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17838\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/green-half-circle.gif\" alt=\"green half circle\" width=\"21\" height=\"20\" \/> \u00a0Green half-circle<\/strong>: The chemical is expected to be of low concern based on experimental and modeled data. Additional data would strengthen our confidence in the chemical\u2019s safer status.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17841\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/yellow-triangle.gif\" alt=\"yellow triangle\" width=\"21\" height=\"20\" \/> \u00a0Yellow triangle<\/strong>: The chemical has met Safer Choice Criteria for its functional ingredient-class, but has some hazard profile issues. Specifically, a chemical with this code is not associated with a low level of hazard concern for all human health and environmental endpoints. (See \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/saferchoice\/standard#tab-2\">Safer Choice Criteria<\/a>). While it is a best-in-class chemical and among the safest available for a particular function, the function fulfilled by the chemical should be considered an area for safer chemistry innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17840\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/grey-square.gif\" alt=\"grey square\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/> \u00a0Grey square<\/strong>: This chemical will not be acceptable for use in products that are candidates for the Safer Choice label and currently labeled products that contain it must reformulate per \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/saferchoice\/safer-choice-implementation-and-compliance-schedules\">Safer Choice Compliance Schedules<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beyond Pesticides advocates for products that avoid ingredients linked to human health or environmental hazards.
