These findings come on the heels of the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s (USDA)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2017\/03\/usda-will-not-begin-testing-glyphosate-u-s-food-year\/\">decision to abandon plans<\/a> for testing the U.S. food supply for glyphosate residues. In light of this, Beyond Pesticides is again urging USDA to test for glyphosate residues in U.S. food.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19465\" src=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/glyphosate-roundup-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/glyphosate-roundup-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/glyphosate-roundup-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/glyphosate-roundup-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/static.producer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/CFIA_ACIA-9123346-v1-FSSD-FSSS-Glyphosate-Final-Report-15-16_0184101.pdf#_ga=1.196489061.892407858.1492107204\">CFIA report<\/a>: \u201cIn 2015-2016, 3188 samples of domestic and imported food products were collected and tested for glyphosate residues in three programs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Testing of 482 samples of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables as part of the National Chemical Residue Monitoring Program (NCRMP);<\/li>\n<li>Retail survey of 2497 samples of grains (barley, buckwheat, and quinoa), beverages, bean, pea, lentil, chickpea and soy products;<\/li>\n<li>A survey of over 209 retail samples of infant foods as part of the 2015-2016 Children\u2019s Food Project.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Out of the 3,188 products tested, glyphosate residues are detected in 29.7% of samples. The highest number of samples with residues detected occur in bean, pea and lentil products, at 47.4%. Of those bean, pea, and lentil samples, 0.6% have residues higher than allowed by Health Canada\u2019s Maximum Residue Limit (MRL). The second highest number of samples found to have glyphosate residues occur in grain products, at 36.6%. Out of those grain samples, 3.9% have residues higher than allowed by the MRL. Even though samples are found that exceed the MRL, Health Canada has determined that none pose a health or safety risk. Many scientists, environmentalists, and concerned citizens disagree, pointing to the <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/index.php?s=glyphosate\">extensive science<\/a> demonstrating the harm of glyphosate exposure, even at low levels.<\/p>\n<p>Glyphosate became a focus of media attention\u00a0following the 2015 World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/03\/glyphosate-classified-carcinogenic-by-international-cancer-agency-group-calls-on-u-s-to-end-herbicides-use-and-advance-alternatives\/\">glyphosate as a \u201cprobable human carcinogen.<\/a>\u201d In addition to IARC\u2019s findings,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net\/ncap\/pages\/26\/attachments\/original\/1428423381\/glyphosate.pdf?1428423381\">previous studies<\/a>\u00a0have linked the toxicant to non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma and multiple myeloma. One study finds that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/09\/kidney-liver-damage-linked-to-chronic-low-dose-glyphosate-exposure\/\">chronic, low-dose exposure to glyphosate<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0leads to adverse effects to liver and kidney health. Roundup formulations can also induce a dose-dependent formation of DNA adducts (altered forms of DNA linked to chemical exposure, playing a key role in chemical carcinogenesis) in the kidneys and liver of mice. Human cell endocrine disruption on the androgen receptor, inhibition of transcriptional activities on estrogen receptors on HepG2, DNA damage and cytotoxic effects occurring at concentrations well below \u201cacceptable\u201d residues have all been observed.<\/p>\n<p>Even more concerning is the fact that Monsanto, the producer of Roundup (glyphosate), <a href=\"http:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2017\/03\/monsanto-epa-collude-fight-cancer-classification-roundup-glyphosate-according-court-released-documents\/\">may have colluded<\/a> with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fight the IARC cancer classification for glyphosate. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/14\/business\/monsanto-roundup-safety-lawsuit.html?_r=1\">New York Times<\/a>, unsealed court documents \u201cinclude Monsanto\u2019s internal emails and email traffic between the company and federal regulators [and] suggested that Monsanto had ghostwritten research that was later attributed to academics.\u201d Monsanto has made several other efforts to muddle the science showing glyphosate causes harm.<\/p>\n<p>While federal oversight and regulation lags behind, environmental groups, like Beyond Pesticides, are urging localities to restrict or ban the use of glyphosate and other unnecessary toxic pesticides. These findings come on the heels of the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s (USDA)\u00a0decision to abandon plans for testing the U.S. food supply for glyphosate residues. In light of this, Beyond Pesticides is again urging USDA to test for glyphosate residues in U.S. food. According to the CFIA report: \u201cIn 2015-2016, 3188 samples of domestic and imported food products were collected and tested for glyphosate residues in three programs: Testing of 482 samples of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables as part of the National Chemical Residue Monitoring Program (NCRMP); Retail survey of 2497 samples of grains (barley, buckwheat, and quinoa), beverages, bean, pea, lentil, chickpea and soy products; A survey of over 209 retail samples of infant foods as part of the 2015-2016 Children\u2019s Food Project.\u201d Out of the 3,188 products tested, glyphosate residues are detected in 29.7% of samples.
