\"\"(Beyond Pesticides<\/em>, June 11, 2018)\u00a0\u00a0With news <\/a>that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows Roundup and its active ingredient glyphosate to be used despite evidence that it causes developmental effects following low-dose exposure, it is crucial that citizens demand that local governments provide the protection that EPA refuses. A pilot study \u2014the first stage of the Global Glyphosate Study<\/a> by the Ramazzini Institute (Italy) released in May\u2014 found that doses of either glyphosate or Roundup considered \u201csafe\u201d by EPA produce genotoxicity, alterations in sexual development, and changes in the intestinal microbiome.<\/p>\n

Tell your local leaders to take action to protect families from pesticides!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

This study adds to the urgent need for action, given previous findings that Roundup is: (1) linked to cancer<\/a> by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and its subsequent listing on California\u2019s Prop 65 (\u201cchemicals known to cause cancer\u201d) list; (2) promoted by its manufacturer, Monsanto, on the basis of questionable research practices<\/a>; and (3) challenged in a consensus statement by scientists and medical doctors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Glyphosate is not the only pesticide to which we all, including children, are exposed in schools and parks, but it is widely used and portrayed as \u201csafe.\u201d In order to protect children, our local governments and school districts should adopt these policies:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A precautionary approach<\/a> to use of toxic chemicals \u2013when in doubt, throw it out;<\/li>\n
  2. Organic land management practices, which create healthy environments and playing fields<\/a> by building healthy soils;<\/li>\n
  3. Techniques not reliant on pesticides \u2013such as using a steam machine or goats to manage weeds<\/a> in difficult situations;<\/li>\n
  4. Limiting chemical use to an allowed list of organic-compatible fertilizers<\/a> and pest control<\/a> materials (see Products Compatible with Organic Landscape Management<\/a>); and<\/li>\n
  5. An organic land management policy<\/a> that protects children, families, and the local ecology.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Beyond Pesticides believes that people must have a voice in decisions that affect them directly. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
