Without determining critical habitat, the administration is in violation of the ESA, and the survival of a critical endangered species is threatened.<\/p>\n<p>The rusty patched bumblebee has a historical range that included habitat throughout the Northeast and Midwest United States. The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/animalia\/wp\/2017\/03\/21\/the-endangered-listing-for-the-rusty-patched-bumblebee-is-finally-given-wings\/?utm_term=.528022786fc5\">Washington Post<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0notes that, \u201cThe rusty patched bumblebee was so prevalent 20 years ago that pedestrians in Midwestern cities had to shoo them away.\u201d However, pesticide use, climate change, disease, and habitat loss led to significant declines over the last several decades. Since then, their populations have dwindled and their overall decline is estimated at\u00a091 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Administration has dragged its feet on protecting the rusty patched bumblebee since the beginning of its term. The species was proposed for ESA listing\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2016\/09\/fws-proposes-listing-rusty-patched-bumble-bee-endangered-species\/\">under the Obama Administration in 2016,<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2017\/01\/rusty-patch-bumblebee-officially-listed-endangered-species\/\">finalized in 2017 only a week before<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the new Administration took office. However, on his first day in office, President Trump directed federal agencies to postpone the effective date of any regulations that had been published to the federal register but not yet put into effect. This move effectively reversed the ESA listing of the rusty patched bumblebee. In\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2017\/03\/rusty-patched-bumblebee-listed-endangered\/\">March 2017, the species was finally placed onto the endangered list<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the Trump Administration\u2019s actions in this case are more of the norm rather than the exception. In August of last year,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2018\/08\/trump-administration-reverses-ban-bee-toxic-pesticides-national-wildlife-refuges-california-confirms-neonicotinoid-pesticides-harm-bees\/\">DOI reversed a long-standing policy<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that prohibited the use of systemic, bee-toxic\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/bee-protective-pollinators-and-pesticides\/what-the-science-shows\">neonicotinoid insecticides<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on National Wildlife Refuges. The Administration has also worked on the pesticide industry\u2019s behalf to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2019\/01\/epa-drops-plans-to-weaken-farmworker-protections\/\">slow down the implementation of farmworker protections<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2017\/03\/epa-reverses-course-allows-continued-use-highly-neurotoxic-pesticide-chlorpyrifos\/\">continue the allowance<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of another highly toxic insecticide\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=17\">chlorpyrifos<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.everyaction.com\/8xXMK6NdD028RyuyS9f-iw2\">Tell Your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators to Urge U.S. Department of Interior Acting Secretary David Bernhardt to protect the endangered rusty patched bumblebee as required by law<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Letter to Congress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Department of the Interior (DOI) is required to determine \u201ccritical habitat\u201d that contains physical and biological requirements a listed endangered species needs in order to recover.
