The result of the agency&#8217;s actions will be a dramatic increase in the use of synthetic pyrethroids, insecticides found in indoor and outdoor bug sprays, bug bombs, and often used on conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. EPA, under the leadership of former fossil fuel lobbyist Andrew Wheeler, is embracing the positions of the pesticide industry while ignoring independent science and health and environmental groups.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the agrichemical industry trade group,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/59b55b2b37c581fbf88309c2\/t\/5a4fcbbf0852296d70b83056\/1515178943542\/Cyhalothrin+-+FINAL+Comments+-+CLA.pdf\">Croplife America, submitted comments<\/a>\u00a0to EPA during its review of synthetic pyrethroids. The organization urged EPA to rely on a health model developed by a different industry group, the Council for the Advancement of Pyrethroid Human Risk Assessment (CAPHRA), in determining the \u201csafety factor\u201d to apply to children. \u201cSafety factors\u201d for children are required under the 1996 Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), unless there is compelling evidence indicating the additional margin of safety is unnecessary. These factors generally require manufacturers to lower label application rates of a pesticide active ingredient by 3 to 10 times in order to safeguard the health of developing infants, toddlers, and children.
