Tell Your Governor that Lawn Care Pesticides are Not Essential and Increase Risk of COVID-19.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Most states follow some variation of guidance issued by the Department of Homeland Security,\u00a0Memorandum on Identification of Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers During COVID-19 Response<\/em><\/a>, in determining which industries are \u201cessential\u201d and can therefore remain in operation. DHS guidance identifies as essential, \u201cWorkers such as plumbers, electricians, exterminators, builders, contractors, HVAC Technicians, landscapers, and other service providers who provide services that are necessary to maintaining the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences, businesses and buildings such as hospitals, senior living facilities, any temporary construction required to support COVID-19 response.\u201d<\/p>\n

While some of the services provided by landscapers and exterminators may be necessary to maintaining safety, sanitation, and essential operations,\u00a0pesticide application for cosmetic lawn care purposes\u00a0is not<\/a>. The hazards of pesticides may be amplified during this pandemic. Threats to the\u00a0immune<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0respiratory<\/a>\u00a0systems posed by pesticides\u00a0are likely to make those exposed more susceptible to the coronavirus<\/a>.\u00a0Governors should designate as essential\u00a0outdoor maintenance, including vegetation, only when necessary to prevent spoliation, avoid imminent damage, or address emergency repairs. As you seek to protect residents of our state from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important that you allow essential work to continue, but do not allow activities that may make us more susceptible to the disease.<\/p>\n
