The honor is being awarded under the false claim that glyphosate is nontoxic.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"2\">The 2007 class of inductees was announced at an event Thursday, February 8, on Capitol Hill, and the induction ceremony will take place on May 5 in Ohio. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2007-02\/niho-nih020807.php\">statement<\/a> released by the National Inventors Hall of Fame says of Dr. Franz: \u201cIn 1970, while working at Monsanto, Franz discovered the glyphosate class of herbicides, later marketed under the brand name Roundup \u00ae. Glyphosate herbicides eliminate more than 125 kinds of weeds and are nontoxic to animals.&#8221;<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"2\">In fact, Roundup has been found to be harmful to animals and may pose a threat to humans as well.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"2\">Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is the number one most commonly used pesticide in U.S. agriculture, and the second most commonly used in non-agricultural settings in the U.S. According to a Beyond Pesticides literature review (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/index.htm\">GATEWAY<\/a>), glyphosate is linked to cancer, reproductive effects, neurotoxicity, kidney\/liver damage, and asthma.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"2\">A study published by the American Cancer Society (1999) finds that people exposed to glyphosate are 2.7 times more likely to develop Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Further, four peer-reviewed studies demonstrate the ability of glyphosate-containing herbicides to cause genetic damage to DNA (mutagenicity), even at very low concentration levels (source: <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pesticide.org\/glyphosate.pdf\">Journal of Pesticide Reform<\/a><\/em>). A 2005 study published in the peer-reviewed journal, <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/docs\/2005\/7728\/abstract.html\">Environmental Health Perspectives<\/a><\/em>, found damaging endocrine effects of glyphosate and Roundup to fetal growth at levels 10 times lower than used in agriculture. The product formulation Roundup was shown to be at least twice as toxic as the active ingredient alone.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"2\">Glyphosate use directly impacts a variety of nontarget animals including insects, earthworms, and fish, and indirectly impacts birds and small mammals. A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/md1.csa.com\/partners\/viewrecord.php?requester=gs&#038;collection=ENV&#038;recid=1883504&#038;q=author%3A%22Hassan%22+intitle%3A%22Results+of+the+fourth+joint+pesticide+testing+programme+...%22+&#038;uid=787135689&#038;setcookie=yes\">study<\/a> conducted by the International Organization for Biological Control found that exposure to Roundup killed over 50 percent of three species of beneficial insects \u2014 parasitoid wasps, lacewings and ladybugs. Repeated applications of glyphosate significantly affect the growth and survival of earthworms. Studies have also shown that glyphosate, and in particular, the inert ingredients in the formulation of Roundup are acutely toxic to fish.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"2\"><strong><em>TAKE ACTION:<\/em><\/strong> Send a letter to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.invent.org\/about_invent_now\/4_2_0_contact.asp\">National Inventors Hall of Fame<\/a> telling them that it is inappropriate to honor the inventor of a toxic chemical among the ranks of great medical inventors. Beyond Pesticides believes that people must have a voice in decisions that affect them directly. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
