Specifically, glyphosate exhibits strong evidence of genotoxicity, epigenetic alterations (heritable changes in gene expression), oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, endocrine disruption, and disturbs gut microbiota implicated in lymphomagenesis (growth and development of lymphoma). Although organizations like the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) designate glyphosate as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/assets\/media\/documents\/GlyphosateCausesCancer.pdf\"><em>probable human carcinogen<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=37\">scientific literature<\/a>\u00a0supports the findings on these adverse effects purported by glyphosate, the chemical remains on the U.S. market in various formulations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=37\">Glyphosate<\/a>\u00a0is the most commonly used active ingredient worldwide, appearing in many herbicide formulas, not just Bayer\u2019s (formerly Monsanto) Roundup\u00ae. The use of this chemical has been increasing since the inception of crops genetically modified to tolerate glyphosate over two decades ago. The toxic herbicide readily contaminates the ecosystem with residues pervasive in food and water commodities. In addition to this study, literature proves time and time again that glyphosate has an association with cancer development, as well as human,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/04\/invertebrates-and-plants-face-increasing-threat-from-pesticides-use-despite-declining-chemical-use-patterns\/\">biotic<\/a>, and ecosystem\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/assets\/media\/documents\/journal\/bp-37.2-su17%20Glysophate-final.pdf\">harm<\/a>. Therefore, advocates point to the need for national policies to reassess hazards associated with disease development and diagnosis resulting from or exacerbated by exposure to chemical pollutants. The study highlights, \u201cOur findings strengthen the mechanistic evidence that glyphosate is a\u00a0<em>probable<\/em>\u00a0human carcinogen and provide biological plausibility for previously reported cancer associations in humans, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using\u00a0<em>in vivo, ex vivo<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>in vitro<\/em>\u00a0human and mammalian mechanistic studies, researchers compare exposure to glyphosate\/GBF with little to no exposure counterparts for evidence of the ten KCs of carcinogens. All known human carcinogens have one or more of the ten KCs, and these mechanisms cause cancer through,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Electrophilic (an affinity towards electrons) or metabolic activation (KC1),<\/li>\n<li>Genotoxicity (KC2),<\/li>\n<li>Alterations in DNA repair, causing genome instability (KC3),<\/li>\n<li>Inducing epigenetic changes (KC4),<\/li>\n<li>Inducing oxidative stress (KC5),<\/li>\n<li>Inducing chronic inflammation (KC6),<\/li>\n<li>Immunosuppression (KC7),<\/li>\n<li>Reducing receptor-mediated effects\/endocrine disruption (KC8),<\/li>\n<li>Immortalizing cancer cells (KC9),<\/li>\n<li>Alterations in cell proliferation, death, or nutrient supply (KC10).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Researchers screened all\u00a0<em>in vivo, ex vivo,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>in vitro<\/em>\u00a0studies of glyphosate\/GBF exposure in humans\/mammals, reporting any KC-related outcome available in PubMed before August 2021. The researchers used the selected studies to construct a matrix, analyzing the matrix in program R to determine the strength of evidence and quality assessments. Although only 175 of the 2,537 articles met inclusion criteria, the researchers extracted over 50,000 data points related to the aforementioned KC outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the analysis find strong evidence for KC2, KC4, KC5, KC6, and KC8, limited evidence for KC1 and KC3, and inadequate evidence for KC7, KC9, and KC10. Specifically, genotoxicity (KC2) and endocrine disruption (KC8) from GBF have the strongest association with carcinogenicity. The reviewed studies demonstrate that the evidence of genotoxicity is stronger among humans than in animal studies, with GBF having a greater impact on both study groups than just glyphosate alone. Additionally, the review indicates glyphosate can alter hormone (endocrine) levels and receptor activity, with the estrogen receptors being most sensitive to glyphosate and GBFs.<\/p>\n<p>Almost five decades of extensive glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) use has put human, animal, and environmental health at risk. The chemical\u2019s ubiquity threatens\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/12\/ubiquitous-herbicide-glyphosate-roundup-threatens-nearly-all-endangered-species-says-epa\/\">93 percent<\/a>\u00a0of all U.S. endangered species,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/11\/crop-diversity-in-commercial-agriculture-decreases-pest-populations-and-pesticides-use-while-stabilizing-biodiversity\/\">resulting<\/a>\u00a0in biodiversity loss and ecosystem disruption (e.g.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/03\/implications-for-human-health-glyphosate-related-soil-erosion-re-releases-toxic-pesticides-from-soil\/\">soil erosion<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=000027078904488976623:jbk1nkc-4pm&amp;q=https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/assets\/media\/documents\/journal\/bp-37.2-su17%2520web-final.pdf&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi46Lm3ubbyAhXzFVkFHVfkChEQFjAJegQICRAB&amp;usg=AOvVaw3EU3fE78SdNxwBPF68-hiX\">and loss of services<\/a>). Exposure to GBHs has implications for specific alterations in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/06\/implications-for-human-health-pesticides-and-other-environmental-contaminants-alter-gut-microbiome\/\">microbial gut composition<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/01\/long-term-roundup-exposure-found-to-harm-keystone-wildlife-species\/\">trophic cascades<\/a>. Similar to this paper, past studies find a strong association between glyphosate exposure and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2019\/09\/health-and-environmental-groups-call-on-epa-to-revoke-glyphosates-registration\/\">the development of various health anomalies,<\/a>\u00a0including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2019\/03\/another-study-links-glyphosate-to-cancer\/\">cancer<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/05\/glyphosate-in-roundup-linked-to-parkinsons-disease\/\">Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/364\/bmj.l962\">autism<\/a>. Although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies glyphosate herbicides as \u201cnot likely to be carcinogenic to humans,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/toxprofiles\/tp214.pdf\">stark evidence<\/a>\u00a0demonstrates links to various cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Thus, EPA\u2019s classification perpetuates environmental injustice among individuals disproportionately exposed to chemicals like farmworkers, especially in marginalized communities. Chemical companies knowingly fail and continue to fail to warn farmers adequately about the dangers of glyphosate. Additionally, the manufacturer\u2019s (Bayer\/Monsanto) discredited <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/12\/review-shows-that-monsanto-bayer-claims-of-glyphosate-safety-not-supported-by-credible-science\/\">chemical review conclusions<\/a>\u00a0challenge the European Union research.<\/p>\n<p>The territory for research on pesticides\u2019 potential carcinogenicity and other impacts on human health is exceedingly complicated. Yet there is some convergence across research that exposure to certain pesticides increases the risk of developing some cancers. The association that has been in the blinding spotlight for the past few years is between exposures to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/cancer#lymp\">the risk of developing cancer, particularly non-Hodgkin Lymphoma<\/a>\u00a0(NHL). Beyond Pesticides has covered the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2019\/02\/study-confirms-findings-on-carcinogenic-glyphosate-suggests-compelling-link\/\">mounting evidence<\/a>\u00a0of the dangers of glyphosate, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2019\/02\/study-confirms-findings-on-carcinogenic-glyphosate-suggests-compelling-link\/\">meta-study<\/a>\u00a0that suggests a compelling link between exposures to glyphosate-based herbicides and increased risk of NHL.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Beyond Pesticides has traced the developments in the science and regulatory arena, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2015\/03\/glyphosate-classified-carcinogenic-by-international-cancer-agency-group-calls-on-u-s-to-end-herbicides-use-and-advance-alternatives\/\">International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) 2015 landmark designation<\/a>\u00a0of glyphosate as potentially carcinogenic<\/li>\n<li>Evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2017\/06\/inspector-general-investigates-alleged-monsanto-epa-collusion-reject-glyphosate-cancer-classification\/\">EPA colluded<\/a>\u00a0with Monsanto (maker of Roundup, the most widely used glyphosate-based herbicide) to advantage industry and that Monsanto had ghostwritten research that countered scientific conclusions on the cancer associations of the compound,<\/li>\n<li>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2018\/04\/court-affirms-listing-glyphosate-probable-carcinogen\/\">California\u2019s 2017 listing of glyphosate under Proposition 65 as a probable carcinogen<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2018\/04\/court-affirms-listing-glyphosate-probable-carcinogen\/\">2018 Appellate Court affirmation<\/a>\u00a0of its ability to do so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Glyphosate has been the subject of public advocacy, regulatory attention, and the target of thousands of lawsuits. (Beyond Pesticides has covered the glyphosate tragedy extensively;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/litigation\/\">see its litigation archives for multiple articles on glyphosate lawsuits<\/a>.) In June 2020, facing approximately 125,000 suits for Roundup&#8217;s role in cancer outcomes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/06\/bayer-monsanto-committed-to-continued-sales-of-roundup-glyphosate-announces-10-9-billion-settlement-with-cancer-victims-protects-company-from-future-trials-by-jury\/\">Bayer announced a $10 billion settlement<\/a>\u00a0to resolve roughly 75% of current and potential future litigation. However, roughly 30,000 complainants ultimately did not sign on to the settlement, so the queue of potential lawsuits is still potentially enormous. Although Bayer tried for a second settlement (~ $2 billion) to handle future claims, a U.S. District Court judge for the Northern District of California\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/06\/judge-rejects-bayer-proposal-to-settle-future-roundup-claims\/\">rejected<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/02\/proposed-bayer-monsanto-settlement-for-roundup-victims-offers-payments-and-challenges\/\">Bayer&#8217;s 2021 settlement proposal<\/a>. The judge stated that the settlement was inadequate for future victims diagnosed with cancer after using the herbicide. Bayer has never acknowledged any harm caused by glyphosate,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/12\/review-shows-that-monsanto-bayer-claims-of-glyphosate-safety-not-supported-by-credible-science\/\">maintaining<\/a>\u00a0the chemical is safe for use. However, in July 2021,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforfoodsafety.org\/press-releases\/6421\/monsanto-bayer-to-end-us-residential-sales-of-toxic-pesticide-glyphosate\">Bayer announced its plan<\/a>\u00a0to end sales of its glyphosate-based herbicides (including its flagship product, Roundup) in the domestic U.S. residential lawn and garden market in 2023. Under the plan, uses in food production will continue.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the systemic review highlight an all too familiar issue. Despite these concerning data, evidence of widespread exposure to a carcinogen has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2022\/09\/epas-failure-to-ban-glyphosate-keeps-burden-of-protection-with-consumers-and-local-and-state-governments\/\">failed to sway regulators at <\/a>EPA, necessitating meaningful change by elected officials to reform pesticide law. Scientists highlight epidemiological evidence associating glyphosate with blood cancers like non-Hodgkin lymphoma and strong evidence of carcinogenicity in laboratory animal research brought on by genotoxicity (DNA damage) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2023\/01\/glyphosate-induces-oxidative-stress-a-cancer-precursor-according-to-nih-study\/\">oxidative stress<\/a>. In 2015, the IARC Working Group demonstrated glyphosate has strong evidence of genotoxicity (KC2) and oxidative stress (KC5). However, recent studies providing additional data supports evidence of KC2 and KC5, as well as epigenetic changes (KC4), chronic inflammation (KC6), and endocrine disruption (KC8) regarding glyphosate and GBF. Thus, glyphosate presents evidence of all five KCs of carcinogens. Although there is limited or inadequate evidence for the remaining KCs, the review encourages further examination of the effects of glyphosate and other chemicals through all ten KCs and its relation to lymphoid cancers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study concludes, &#8220;Overall, the mechanistic evidence for glyphosate and GBFs possessing multiple key characteristics of carcinogens has become stronger since IARC&#8217;s evaluation in 2015 and implicates several pathways by which these substances could induce cancer, such as lymphoma, in humans. [&#8230;][O]ur understanding of glyphosate&#8217;s effects using the KCs paves the way for exploring the intricate mechanisms underlying its potential pathway to lymphoma.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/understanding\/statistics\">Cancer<\/a>\u00a0is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with over eight million people succumbing to the disease every year. Notably, IARC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gco.iarc.fr\/tomorrow\/en\/dataviz\/isotype\">predicts<\/a>\u00a0an increase in new cancer cases from 19.3 million to 30.2 million per year by 2040. Therefore, studies related to pesticides and cancer will aid in understanding the underlying mechanisms that cause the disease. Beyond Pesticides\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/03\/farmworkers-and-conservationists-sue-epa-for-re-approving-monsanto-bayers-cancer-causing-pesticide-glyphosate-roundup\/\">challenges the registration of chemicals like glyphosate in court<\/a>\u00a0due to their impacts on soil, air, water, and our health. While legal battles press on, government officials must eliminate the use of toxic synthetic herbicides to avoid the adverse effects of chemical exposure and contamination. Instead, emphasis on converting to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2018\/07\/regenerative-farms-yield-soil-health-higher-profits-chemical-intensive-operations\/\">regenerative-organic systems<\/a>, using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/managesafe\/overview\">least-toxic pest control<\/a>\u00a0to mitigate harmful pesticide use,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rodaleinstitute.org\/science\/farming-systems-trial\/\">restore soil health<\/a>, reduce carbon emissions, and increase carbon sequestration should be the main focus. Public policy must advance a shift to organic, rather than allow unnecessary reliance on pesticides. Considering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=37\">glyphosate<\/a>\u00a0levels in the human body decrease by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/08\/study-shows-organic-food-diet-reduces-residues-of-glyphosate-in-body\/\">70%<\/a>\u00a0through a one-week switch to an organic diet,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/organic-agriculture\/overview\">purchasing organic food whenever possible<\/a>\u2014which never allows glyphosate use\u2014can help curb exposure and resulting adverse health effects.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential to understand the health implications of pesticide use and exposure for humans, especially when pesticides increase chronic disease risk. The founders, who established Beyond Pesticides (originally as National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides) as a nonprofit membership organization in 1981, felt that without the existence of such an organized, national network, local, state and national pesticide policy would become, under chemical industry pressure, increasingly unresponsive to public health and environmental concerns. Beyond Pesticides believes that people must have a voice in decisions that affect them directly. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides seeks to protect healthy air, water, land, and food for ourselves and future generations. By forging ties with governments, nonprofits, and people who rely on these natural resources, we reduce the need for unnecessary pesticide use and protect public health and the environment. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
