In this respect, consideration being given to biodiversity conservation goals in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts raise important issues critical of the chemical-intensive practices that are conventionally used to control mosquitoes. The state is taking public comments until August 30, 2024 on the development of biodiversity conservation goals. In an executive order (no.618), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/executive-orders\/no-618-biodiversity-conservation-in-massachusetts\">Biodiversity Conservation<\/a>, issued September 21, 2023, Governor Maura Healey (D) directed the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/biodiversity-conservation-goals-public-listening-session-presentation\/download\">Department of Fish and Game<\/a> to \u201cconduct a comprehensive review of the existing efforts of all executive department offices and agencies to support biodiversity conservation in Massachusetts [and] recommend biodiversity conservation goals for 2030, 2040, and 2050 and strategies to meet those goals.\u201d\u00a0 [Massachusetts residents, please look out for an action from Beyond Pesticides.]<\/p>\r\n<p>In response to development of biodiversity goals in Massachusetts, last week Beyond Pesticides testified before the Massachusetts Fish and Game Department and urged the state to adopt a broad government-wide strategy that establishes biodiversity protection and enhancement as a basic tenet for all programmatic decisions going forward. In this context, Beyond Pesticides identified the following issues, among others, which stand out as emblematic of issues that require attention under the Commonwealth\u2019s Biodiversity Conservation Goals: (i) Ecologically-based mosquito management requirements, (ii) aggressive efforts and chemical restrictions to protect pollinators and stave off the \u201cinsect apocalypse\u201d and wildlife decline, and (iii) organic land management practices for all Commonwealth lands in accordance with defined practices and allowed substances in conformance with the federal National Organic Program\u2019s National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the Governor\u2019s executive, among the list of compelling concerns that are driving this process is the following acknowledgement that ecosystems: \u201cfilter our air; clean our water; provide food security; provide economic opportunity; regulate climate by removing carbon from the atmosphere; provide resiliency against the worsening impacts of climate change like extreme weather events, heat, sea level rise, and flooding; provide recreational opportunities; and provide a range of other ecosystem services[.]\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The focus on biodiversity in Massachusetts is taking shape as mosquito season has begun, resulting in broadcast spraying of pesticides to kill them.
