They continue, \u201cPesticides, particularly persistent organic pollutants (POPs), are among the top ten chemicals and hazardous compounds that the WHO [World Health Organization] has recognized as being a concern for global health. The overuse and improper handling of agrochemicals is the primary driver of the ecological disaster.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers, from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in India, conducted a literature review to look broadly and comprehensively at the range of factors that contribute to adverse health effects (from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/breast-cancer\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/01\/loss-of-chromosome-y-in-male-farmers-genotoxic-implications-for-cancer\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">genotoxic effects<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/brain-effects\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">neurotoxicity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and more). They searched PubMed and Google Scholar for studies between 2004-2024 for relevant information on soil health, sustainable agriculture, food security, soil security, and the associations with human health. Their scientific findings lead the authors to conclude that the building of healthy soils will eliminate the need for toxic inputs in land management, resulting in healthier people (see studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.unl.edu\/agronomyfacpub\/15\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0167880901002468\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.wur.nl\/en\/publications\/healthy-soils-a-prerequisite-for-sustainable-food-security\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), while current reliance on pesticides causes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2021\/10\/monoculture-agriculture-leads-to-poor-soil-health\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">soil health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/overview\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">human health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to suffer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStudies in Northern India have shown evidence of the presence of heavy metals and pesticides in samples of fodder, vegetables, milk, urine, and blood,\u201d the authors say. (See studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0160412004001394\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/117.252.14.250:8080\/jspui\/bitstream\/123456789\/6247\/1\/Concentration%20of%20heavy%20metals%20in%20groundwater%20and%20heavy%20metal%20pollution%20index%20in%20Punjab.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/282305104_Food_Toxicity_in_Punjab_A_Review_of_Concerns_and_Strategies\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wjpr.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/article_issue\/1420104595.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">One study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> links <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/threatened-waters\/overview\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">water contamination<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from heavy metals and pesticides to increased rates of spontaneous abortions, premature births, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/08\/study-links-pesticide-exposure-during-preconception-and-first-trimester-to-stillbirth\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">stillbirths<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that are five times as frequent in comparison to other South Asian countries. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/learningdevelopmental\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Developmental delays<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, blue lines in the gums, mottled teeth, and gastrointestinal diseases were also noted. These effects occur in areas with groundwater contamination of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/heptachlor\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">heptachlor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=17\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">chlorpyrifos<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, b-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=146\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">endosulfan<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=138\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">dimethoate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/aldrin\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">aldrin<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that is more than permissible limits (MPL).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Higher cancer prevalence is also noted in Punjab. Two studies (linked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19151435\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/282073593_An_Epidemiological_Study_of_Cancer_Reported_from_Villages_of_Punjab_India\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) show that cancer in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/womens-health\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">female<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/sexual-and-reproductive-dysfunction\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reproductive system<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (breast, uterus\/cervix and ovary) are more common in one district where levels of heavy metals and pesticides such as heptachlor, ethion, and chlorpyrifos were significantly higher in samples of drinking water, vegetables, and blood. There is a dependence on petrochemical pesticides worldwide that can be attributed to companies selling harmful chemicals, even though safer alternatives exist, while applicators and consumers are unaware of the risks and continue causing harm to the environment and all organisms.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the researchers, \u201cT<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he three most important environmental problems affecting the globe now are pollution, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/climate-change\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">climate change<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/biodiversity\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">biodiversity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> loss.\u201d Based on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/assets\/media\/documents\/bp-38.1-sp18-ThinkingHolistically-cited1.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the science<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers, central to conventional chemical-intensive systems, are contributors to these problems. And if you don\u2019t get diseases then you don\u2019t need the pesticides and herbicides to control them.
