The authors call these effects a significant concern for public health, as there has been growing evidence of EDCs with risk factors for decreased fertility.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/infertility\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Infertility<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u201caffects a substantial proportion of the world\u2019s population with approximately one in six people affected,\u201d the researchers note. They continue: \u201cOver the last 70 years, global fertility has been constantly in decline due to behavioral and societal changes&#8230; [E]merging evidence has shown that infertility incidence is linked to exposure to environmental factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and a wide range of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including pesticides (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=17\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">chlorpyrifos<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=37\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">glyphosate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [DDT] and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=220\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">methoxychlor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">), phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), dioxins, and bisphenols.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In this review, over 100 studies are summarized to showcase the link between EDC exposure and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/sexual-and-reproductive-dysfunction\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reproductive effects<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in women, including infertility and related diseases such as endometriosis, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), and endocrine axis dysregulation. The studies included investigating the \u201cmechanisms by which EDCs cause ovarian aging, folliculogenesis, decrease of oocyte quality, ovulation disorders, development and receptivity of endometrium, endometriosis, fetal development abnormalities, and epigenetics modulation,\u201d the authors state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Results from these studies show exposure to EDCs can lead to infertility and reproductive effects through various mechanisms. Altering the balance of any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/assets\/media\/documents\/gateway\/health%20effects\/endocrine%20cited.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">endocrines<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that impact reproduction can change fertilization outcomes. The researchers say, \u201cOne of the most described mechanisms is when EDCs mimic hormones such as estrogen and bind to their receptors leading to hormonal disruption.\u201d This can alter the ovulation process.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The authors note: \u201cAdditionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/oxidative-stress\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">oxidative stress<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in ovarian tissues, that damages cells and impairs their function, is induced by several EDCs. If the oocyte cannot mature, due to an early ovarian aging, impaired folliculogenesis or cannot be expelled due to anovulation, the fertilization cannot occur. they also impair the future reproductive health of the fetus.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/children-and-schools\/hazards-of-pesticides\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Infants and children<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/disproportionate-risks\/overview\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">disproportionate risk<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with pesticide exposure as this is a critical developmental window.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chemical exposure during this window can lead to lasting health effects into adulthood. The authors note that \u201cthe reach of EDCs to the embryo by transplacental transfer can lead to genome alteration during embryonic germ cell precursors reprogramming&#8230; These epigenetic modulations by EDCs suggest serious long-term effects on human reproductive health and fertility decline.\u201d Studies find that EDC exposure within the \u201cfirst 1,000 days of life increases the risk of developing pathologies in adulthood.\u201d (See studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10094680\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S108495211830154X\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As Beyond Pesticides has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/11\/deadly-endocrine-disrupting-pesticides-subject-to-epa-proposals-that-fall-far-short-according-to-advocates\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">previously reported<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences explains endocrine disruptors this way: \u201cEndocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or human-made chemicals that may mimic, block, or interfere with the body\u2019s hormones, which are part of the endocrine system. These chemicals are associated with a wide array of health issues. . . Endocrine glands, distributed throughout the body, produce the hormones that act as signaling molecules after release into the circulatory system. The human body is dependent on hormones for a healthy endocrine system, which controls many biological processes like normal growth, fertility, and reproduction.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With the ubiquitous use of EDCs, exposure to the general population occurs through contact with contaminated food, soil, and air. Studies continue to link EDCs with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/cancer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cancer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, cardiovascular risk, behavioral disorders, autoimmune abnormalities, and reproductive disorders (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6902641\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0013935116302948\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0890623816304130\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1382668917300649\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">). These effects are seen in higher rates in areas with increased EDC production and pesticide usage, with chemical industry workers and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/farmworkers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">farmworkers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> having the most exposure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To abate these impacts, especially in areas with agricultural EDC exposure, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/organic-agriculture\/overview\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">organic land management<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> can be implemented. In adopting this holistic solution, farmworker exposure is reduced, and food crops are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/organic-agriculture\/eating-with-a-conscience\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">safer and healthier<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to eat. The authors call these effects a significant concern for public health, as there has been growing evidence of EDCs with risk factors for decreased fertility.\u00a0\u00a0 Infertility \u201caffects a substantial proportion of the world\u2019s population with approximately one in six people affected,\u201d the researchers note. They continue: \u201cOver the last 70 years, global fertility has been constantly in decline due to behavioral and societal changes&#8230; [E]merging evidence has shown that infertility incidence is linked to exposure to environmental factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and a wide range of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including pesticides (chlorpyrifos, glyphosate, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [DDT] and methoxychlor), phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), dioxins, and bisphenols.\u201d\u00a0 In this review, over 100 studies are summarized to showcase the link between EDC exposure and reproductive effects in women, including infertility and related diseases such as endometriosis, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), and endocrine axis dysregulation. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
