Based on an analysis of clinicopathological data from 188 affected women, the study authors demonstrate \u201cthat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/02\/disproportionate-pesticide-hazards-to-farmworkers-and-people-of-color-documented-again\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">occupational exposure<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to pesticides modifies the clinical presentation of disease in breast cancer patients, depending on their age at disease onset, affecting cytokine production, especially in those exhibiting early age at diagnosis.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/breast-cancer-awareness-month\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (BC) is the most common malignant neoplasm affecting women worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in this population,\u201d the researchers report. They continue: \u201cAging is the primary risk factor associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/tag\/breast-cancer\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> development and mortality, resulting in a cumulative lifetime risk of 1 in 8 women developing the disease. Disease onset significantly impacts patient prognosis. While most cases are of late onset and occur in women over 50 years of age, early-onset BC is prevalent in certain populations and is associated with a poor prognosis and aggressive tumor behavior.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Data was collected and analyzed from May 2015 to December 2022, with the study population in Brazil spanning \u201c27 municipalities in the southwest of Paran\u00e1, a region characterized by extensive pesticide use, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/disproportionate-risks\/overview\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">predominantly rural work<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and family farming, with significant participation from women,\u201d the authors state. All patients included in the study underwent screening for familial cancer and genetic testing for BRCA 1 and 2 mutations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Based on age and pesticide exposure, the women were organized into four groups: pesticide-unexposed women with early disease onset (48 women), pesticide-unexposed women with late disease onset (45 women), pesticide-exposed women with early disease onset (50 women), and pesticide-exposed women with late disease onset (45 women).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A variety of additional clinicopathological variables were considered, including menopausal status at diagnosis, body mass index, hormonal receptor status (estrogen and progesterone, positive or negative), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression, Ki67 proliferation index, histological grade, breast cancer molecular subtype, tumor size, presence of distant metastasis, lymph node metastasis, risk stratification for recurrence and death, chemoresistance, and death occurrence. According to the authors: \u201cThese findings suggest that young women exposed to pesticides tend to develop decreased serum levels of IL-12. This feature is possibly associated with reduced type I immunity which is important for eliminating BC. Type I immunity promotes natural killer cell (NK) and CD8+ T-cell-mediated tumor cytotoxicity and toxic mediator release by phagocytes within the tumor microenvironment, leading to cancer cell death via multiple mechanisms.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In examining the cytokine levels within each patient, an association between early-onset exposed women and the development of high-risk tumors was determined. \u201cThese findings indicate that pesticide exposure induces an inflammaging-like state in young women, with increased levels of systemic IL-1 and reduced levels of IL-12 contributing to the increased risk of severe disease in these individuals,\u201d the researchers conclude.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Environmental exposure to pesticides affects the homeostasis of mammary epithelial cells and can result in cancer development. Pesticide exposure triggers inflammatory responses, which leads to the release of toxic mediators like reactive oxygen species (ROS). \u201cThese processes are linked to precarcinogenic events, which may result in cumulative mutations over time and genomic instability,\u201d the authors say. They continue, \u201cEnvironmental factors, particularly those encountered throughout life, can play a key role in influencing the natural history of mammary gland tumorigenesis and BC progression. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/tag\/occupational-risk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Occupational pesticide exposure<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a significant environmental risk factor for BC.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With greater female participation in rural labor comes an increase in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/womens-health\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">women\u2019s health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> risks with direct exposure to pesticides that significantly impacts mammary tissues and creates a pro-inflammatory environment. This is characterized by antioxidant depletion, elevated levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF\u03b1), and increased activity of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR\u03b3)\u2014all contributing to cancer progression.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Many pesticides have been detected in women\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969723039967\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mammary gland tissues<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/bjmbr\/a\/PfPQXn7vShCfbpKkGN3zZPx\/?lang=en\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">breast milk<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The researchers postulate, \u201cApproximately 35 pesticides with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0303720720302276\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">carcinogenic potential<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> have been identified as contributors to tumors or other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/public-health\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2023.1229422\/full\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">adverse effects on the mammary glands<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, indicating that exposure to these substances directly affects breast cells. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-35552-3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Studies in animal models<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> demonstrate that exposure to certain pesticides is linked to significant genetic damage, such as DNA breaks and aneuploidy\u2014critical alterations that can lead to the development of breast cancer.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Scientific literature finds that pesticide exposure disrupts cellular homeostasis, causes cellular injury, and can lead to cell death. Exposure can also initiate the development of diseases by compromising immunosurveillance, particularly against tumors. (See studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/03601234.2020.1777059\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2305-6304\/11\/11\/896\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969724036921\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.) The heightened risks for cancer development are associated with the cumulative genotoxic effects, chromosomal damage, and inflammation that occurs after pesticide exposure. These effects lead to genomic instability and immune alterations that have &#8220;significant implications for carcinogenesis and tumor progression,\u201d the authors report.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Long-term <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oxidative stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is linked to many chronic diseases, including cancer, and there is a wide body of science showing many pesticides causing oxidative stress. (See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0278691521006347\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/01\/oxidative-stress-measured-with-biomarkers-links-pesticide-exposure-to-cancer\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/oxidative-stress\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0147651323001951\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Previous studies<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> also link <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=7\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">atrazine<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to breast cancer, as this pesticide can suppress systemic and local tumor immune functions that promote tumor development. Low concentrations of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=37\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">glyphosate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, even with acute exposure, increase ROS levels, induce hypoxia, and disrupt the DNA repair response in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0219610\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">human triple-negative BC cells<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
