(Beyond Pesticides<\/em>, April 14, 2025)\u00a0The Trump administration has undertaken an unprecedented\u00a0attack on science<\/a>\u00a0in regulatory, research, and educational institutions, with predicted adverse consequences for\u00a0all people across the country<\/a>.\u00a0The Union of Concerned Scientists <\/a>last week published a list of organizations and their tracking of Trump\u2019s dismantling of federal science programs, including health research and the impact by Congressional district. And, the Environmental Protection Network <\/a>estimates that the announced rollbacks at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would erase $254 billion in health and economic benefits.<\/p>\r\n

Perhaps it is understandable that those who oppose environmental and health regulations<\/a>\u00a0that put limits on industry would favor cuts to regulatory agencies. However, the impacts of the current cuts go far beyond\u00a0deregulation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The cuts to agencies affect science at every level. Science funding has been slashed at EPA<\/a>, the\u00a0National Institutes of Health<\/a>\u00a0(NIH),\u00a0Health and Human Services<\/a>\u00a0(HHS),\u00a0Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0(CDC),\u00a0National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health<\/a>\u00a0(NIOSH),\u00a0National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>\u00a0(NOAA), and\u00a0U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/a>\u00a0(USDA). And these cuts have implications for, among other things, clean air and water, protection from wildfires, cures for diseases ranging from Alzheimer’s to childhood cancer, monitoring and protection from lead exposure and infectious disease, mine safety, weather safety, and the viability of farms.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The attack on science does not stop at federal agencies. It affects scientific research and education at every level. Cuts in medical research grants will reduce funding at hospitals and universities in\u00a0every state<\/a>. The cuts have \u201cthrown the research world into chaos<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Admissions for PhD programs are being\u00a0curtailed<\/a>. Perhaps as many as 75% of scientists\u00a0are considering leaving<\/a>\u00a0the U.S., leading to a fear of a \u201clost generation<\/a>\u201d of American scientists. Combined with\u00a0cuts in education,<\/a>\u00a0cuts to scientific research also impact\u00a0K-12 science education<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

These cuts (and others) have provoked resistance throughout the country. Over 1900 elected members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine issued an\u00a0open letter<\/a>\u00a0opposing the Trump administration’s war on science. A group of\u00a0current and former EPA employees<\/a>\u00a0wrote an op-ed piece defending their work in environmental justice programs to protect the health of communities. Researchers, doctors, and their supporters rallied to \u201cStand Up for Science<\/a>\u201d in New York and other cities. A coalition of\u00a0officials from 23 states<\/a>\u00a0sued the Trump administration over cuts to public health. On April 5,\u00a0millions of people<\/a>\u00a0throughout the country attended more than 1,400 \u201cHands Off<\/a>\u201d rallies to protest the Trump administration’s deep budget and staffing cuts, funding freezes, tariffs, and President Trump’s “authoritarian overreach and billionaire-backed agenda.”\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
