Environmental disasters, including fires, floods, and severe weather events, are brought on or exacerbated by widespread reliance on\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/01\/un-climate-crisis-conference-calls-for-phaseout-of-fossil-fuels-linked-to-pesticides-and-fertilizers\/\">disruptive chemicals<\/a>, which played a role in a delayed start to the southern California rainy season, hurricane-force winds, and low humidity levels\u2014all\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/climate-change-dangerous-mix-stoking-145509145.html\">elevated by climate change<\/a>. While climate change may be most apparent\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/weather.com\/news\/weather\/news\/2025-06-23-heat-records-midwest-northeast-june2025?cm_ven=dnt_newsletter_photo&amp;lid=mzxywef4oowd&amp;lctg=4ceb33cabbac833f7ed322a76e95f0f6\">record heat in much of the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0this month, 128\u00b0F in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/07\/weather\/west-coast-heat-wave-california-nevada-oregon\/index.html\">Death Valley<\/a>\u00a0last year, and extreme heat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/world\/global-heat-wave-map-tracker.html\">globally<\/a>, last year&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/event-tracker\/category-5-hurricane-beryl-makes-explosive-start-2024-atlantic-season\">earliest Category 5 hurricane on record<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmefire.com\/2025-fire-season-outlook-and-u-s-wildfire-trends\/\">another volatile wildfire season<\/a>, etc.\u2014as crises are escalating in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/\">human disease<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/biodiversity\/\">biodiversity collapse<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Extreme heat is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/extreme-heat-kills-hundreds-of-thousands-worldwide-each-year\/\">deadliest weather disaster<\/a>\u2014killing hundreds of thousands of people every year. Heat makes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/rafter-ferguson\/pesticides-heat-farmworkers\/\">health effects of pesticides<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/24\/climate\/extreme-heat-pollution-health.html?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20250625&amp;instance_id=157224&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=106267079&amp;segment_id=200612&amp;user_id=5625193d24f471f48e10b00d3655b82d\">other pollutants<\/a>\u00a0more serious. Climate change is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abl4881\">intensifying<\/a>\u00a0the impacts of habitat destruction and toxic chemicals on biodiversity. As the problems grow, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/07\/09\/are-companies-using-carbon-markets-to-sell-more-pesticides\/\">false claims of climate change mitigation<\/a> require scrutiny.\u00a0In this context, as an example, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/03\/regenerative-agriculture-still-misses-the-mark-in-defining-a-path-to-a-livable-future\/\">regenerative agriculture <\/a>fails to require the elimination of petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers\u2014major contributors to the climate crisis\u2014while certified organic agriculture does.<\/p>\n<p>As organic is increasingly understood to be a climate solution,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fibl.org\/en\/themes\/projectdatabase\/projectitem\/project\/2549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OrganicClimateNet<\/a>\u202flast year launched an aggressive effort to build the base of organic farmers in the European Union (EU). As the climate crisis grows exponentially, the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) adopted an agreement with nearly 200 countries committing to the \u201cend of the oil age.\u201d\u00a0<em>See\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/01\/un-climate-crisis-conference-calls-for-phaseout-of-fossil-fuels-linked-to-pesticides-and-fertilizers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN Climate Crisis Conference Calls for Phaseout of Fossil Fuels, which Are Used to Produce Pesticides and Fertilizers<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Organic agriculture can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/03\/study-shows-organic-agriculture-mitigates-climate-crisis-in-contrast-to-conventional-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mitigate climate change<\/a>.<\/strong>\u202fAgriculture is a major contributor to climate change. In a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/370\/6517\/705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent article in\u202f<em>Science<\/em><\/a>, Clark\u202f<em>et al.<\/em>\u00a0show that even if fossil fuel emissions were eliminated immediately, emissions from the global food system alone would make it impossible to limit warming to 1.5\u00b0C and difficult even to realize the 2\u00b0C target. According to the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechange2013.org\/report\/full-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intergovernmental\u00a0Panel on\u00a0Climate Change<\/a>, agriculture and forestry account for as much as 25% of human-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The contribution of animal agriculture has been estimated at 14.5% to 87% or more of total GHG emissions. These estimates include emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia. The carbon dioxide contribution largely comes from converting land from natural forest to pasture or cropland.\u202f<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cRegenerative\u201d agriculture is widely considered to be a solution for reducing or even reversing these impacts. Unfortunately, a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2020\/11\/18\/pesticides-industry-climate-change-marketing-pr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movement by promoters of chemical-intensive agriculture<\/a>\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/17112020\/farm-bureau-environmental-groups-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has fooled some environmentalists<\/a>\u202finto supporting toxic \u201cregenerative\u201d agriculture. While recognizing practices that\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/rodaleinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Regenerative-Organic-Agriculture-White-Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sequester carbon<\/a>\u202fin the soil\u2014practices that are central to organic agriculture\u2014the so-called \u201cregenerative agriculture\u201d promoted by these groups ignores the direct climate impacts of\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/11\/synthetic-fertilizers-accelerate-climate-crisis-finding-there-is-a-conflict-between-the-way-we-are-feeding-people-and-stabilizing-the-climate\/?emci=53492c42-0029-eb11-9fb4-00155d03affc&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nitrogen fertilizers<\/a>, the damage to soil health caused by pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and the fact that pesticide and fertilizer manufacturing is dependent on fossil fuels\u2014as key ingredients as well as for the heat and energy driving chemical\u202freactions.\u202fIt is important to see through this deception.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Organic practices preserve natural lands and biodiversity.<\/strong>\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ab5f75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natural forests<\/a>\u202fare more effective than tree plantations in sequestering carbon. Preserving natural land increases biodiversity, which also\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2020\/10\/natural-areas-surrounding-farmland-critical-to-reducing-pesticide-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduces dependence on petroleum-based pesticides<\/a>. Organic farms\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/NOP%205020%20Biodiversity%20Guidance%20Rev01%20%28Final%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are required to<\/a>\u202f\u201ccomprehensively conserve biodiversity by maintaining or improving all natural resources, including soil, water, wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife, as required by \u00a7 205.200 of the regulations and per the \u00a7 205.2 definition of Natural resources of the operation.\u201d<br \/>\n\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organic agriculture benefits\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pesticidefreelawns.org\/programs\/organic-agriculture\/why-organic\/health-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human health<\/a>.<\/strong>\u202fBy avoiding the use of antibiotics and toxic pesticides, organic agriculture protects\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.organic-center.org\/organic-agriculture-keeps-farmworkers-and-their-families-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">farmworkers and consumers<\/a>. In addition, studies have found organically grown\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2008\/04\/new-report-shows-organic-foods-higher-in-nutrients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plant foods<\/a>\u202fand milk to be nutritionally superior to those produced by chemical-intensive agriculture.\u202f\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>The National Organic Program provides for clarity and enforceability<\/strong>, while providing processes that are open and transparent to growers, consumers, and the public at large. As an established program, it also has its own funding mechanism. Any definition of \u201cregenerative\u201d must\u2014at a minimum\u2014meet organic standards.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Agriculture can be harnessed in the fight against climate change, biodiversity collapse, and health problems, with the elimination of practices that have created the problems. As aptly stated by CEO Emeritus Jeff Moyer of the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/rodaleinstitute.org\/education\/resources\/regenerative-agriculture-and-the-soil-carbon-solution\/\">Rodale Institute<\/a>, &#8220;We believe that in order to be regenerative, you have to start by being organic. It&#8217;s a little disingenuous to say you can regenerate soil health and sequester carbon and still use nitrogen fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. What you&#8217;re really saying is equivalent to saying &#8216;I want to be healthy as a person, but I still want to smoke cigarettes.'&#8221;\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The climate crisis and the devastating decline in biodiversity are escalating because of uncontrolled and unnecessary reliance on toxic chemicals. These threats to life require a meaningful, holistic strategy to end our fossil fuel dependence and use of materials that release harmful levels of noxious gases (including greenhouse gases).\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agriculture must\u2014across the board and on an expedited five-year schedule\u2014shift to organic practices.<\/strong>\u00a0Organic practices both sequester carbon and eliminate petroleum-based pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Importantly, the data show that organic agriculture now operates without sacrificing productivity or profitability. While the vested economic interests in the petroleum and chemical industry cling to the status quo, there are good jobs and money to be made in a green economy.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Pesticides advocates for a national plan to shift to 100% organic farming. Organic land management is more effective at reducing emissions and sequestering carbon in the soil. There is already a national program for certifying farms that meet organic standards. Organic operations must \u201ccomprehensively conserve biodiversity by maintaining or improving all natural resources, including soil, water, wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Undefined \u201cregenerative\u201d agriculture falls short by ignoring the direct climate impacts of nitrogen fertilizers, the damage to soil health and ecosystem services caused by pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and the fact that pesticide and fertilizer manufacturing is dependent on fossil fuels\u2014as key ingredients and for the heat and energy-driving chemical\u202freactions. \u00a0Preserving natural land increases biodiversity, reduces dependence on petroleum-based pesticides, and is more effective in sequestering carbon. Biodiversity buffers against damage from climate change by allowing systems to evolve with changing conditions.\u202fPreserving natural lands and transitioning farms to organic production should be the cornerstones to combating climate change.\u202f<\/p>\n<p>&#x1f4e3; <strong>Beyond Pesticides has sent the following message to its network:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.everyaction.com\/YjgmbNkaM0SdJtMsaBMsBg2\"><strong>As temperatures break records, Congress must act to urgently transition away from petrochemical pesticide and fertilizer use in land management, and support an across-the-board shift to the organic regenerative solution<\/strong><\/a><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.everyaction.com\/YjgmbNkaM0SdJtMsaBMsBg2##anchor\" name=\"#anchor\">.<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Letter to U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As Congress considers elements of the next Farm Bill, climate change is an extremely urgent crisis to address.
