AHS participants include a cohort of thousands of licensed pesticide applicators and their spouses from Iowa and North Carolina, with this particular study as the first to consider the link between pesticide exposure and RA as it affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/womens-health\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">women\u2019s health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cGrowing evidence suggests farming and agricultural pesticide use may be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but few studies have examined specific pesticides and RA among farm women, who may personally use pesticides or be indirectly exposed,\u201d the study authors explain. The findings reveal that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/organochlorines\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">organochlorine insecticides<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that continue to persist in the environment, as well as organophosphate and synthetic pyrethroid pesticides used in public health or residential settings, correlate with RA diagnoses in women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As shared in previous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/08\/modes-of-action-of-persistent-pesticides-in-the-environment-documented-with-ongoing-poisoning-contamination-and-multigenerational-effects\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Daily News<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, for the most part organochlorine pesticides, including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), are no longer used worldwide, but the legacy of their poisoning and contamination persists. These compounds are primarily made up of chlorine atoms, classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) due to their toxic longevity in the environment. Although many countries ban most organochlorine compounds, the chemicals remain in soils, water (solid and liquid), and the surrounding air at levels exceeding U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. While EPA has ended pesticide registration for virtually all of the original POPs, the United States has not joined over 150 countries in ratifying a 2001 United Nations treaty known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pops.int\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which requires the elimination of POPs\u2019 production, use, and\/or release.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Of the participants in the current study who report using pesticides, \u201c[p]ersonal use of organochlorine insecticides was associated with incident RA, especially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/ddt\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">DDT<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=43\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lindane<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d the researchers say. Regarding organophosphate insecticides, a weaker association is seen apart from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=367\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">coumaphos<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=44\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">malathion<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. For carbamate insecticides, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=429\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">carbofuran<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> use is associated with RA, as is the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=422\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">synthetic pyrethroid insecticides<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?chemfind=permethrin\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">permethrin<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and fungicides including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=14\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">captan<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=213\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">metalaxyl<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Of the women who do not report personal use of pesticides, RA is associated with their spouses\u2019 use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=15\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">carbaryl<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=228\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">metribuzin<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=45\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">maneb<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\/<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=206\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mancozeb<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Increased risks are also noted for indirect exposure to DDT, toxaphene, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/coumaphos\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">coumaphos<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, captan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/metalaxyl\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">metalaxyl<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/malathion\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">malathion<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rheumatoid arthritis, one of many types of arthritis, is classified as a systemic autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation and pain. The disease involves both genetic and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36068354\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">environmental risk factors<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, with many factors and triggers still unknown. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/diseases\/rheumatoid-arthritis\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Arthritis Foundation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, 1.5 million people in the U.S. have rheumatoid arthritis, with women three times more likely than men to develop the disease. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db497.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by the Centers for Disease Control\u2018s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics finds that the percentage of adults with arthritis increases in nonmetropolitan areas when compared to metropolitan areas, highlighting the potential role of agriculture and environmental contaminants.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Additional research (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7801054\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC1740725\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">) suggests that, \u201cRA may be associated with farming and pesticide use, but less is known about risks for women living on farms and the role of specific pesticides is not well understood.\u201d With women already more likely to develop RA, exposure to environmental contaminants, such as pesticides, exacerbates the risks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the current study, the researchers review 410 cases of RA reported in women within the AHS cohort. The diagnoses were identified by self-reporting and then confirmed through validation, medication, and\/or Medicare claims data. \u201cWe examined incident RA and personal pesticide use (including overall type, classes, and 32 specific pesticides), considering correlated pesticides and farming tasks, and explored associations with potential indirect exposures through applicator use among women who did not personally apply specific pesticides,\u201d the authors state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In assessing farming activities, the study also finds RA is associated with several other chemicals used in chemical-intensive agriculture, including but not limited to cleaning with solvents, grinding feed, applying fertilizers, and planting. \u201cThe AHS offers a unique opportunity to investigate RA risk in relation to specific pesticide types,\u201d the researchers note. They continue, \u201cWith nearly 10 additional years of follow-up and more than 3-times as many cases than previous AHS reports on RA in spouses, this study of incident RA provides robust evidence that some insecticides may increase RA risk among women.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">These results add to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23116691\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">growing body of science<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that suggests both direct and indirect exposure to pesticides can increase the risk of RA in women. (See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16257361\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27285288\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.) Studies show that pesticides can impact the development of RA through multiple pathways that are both direct (immunotoxic) or indirect (neuroendocrine, microbiome). As the authors state, \u201cPathogenesis [how the disease develops] of RA includes several pathways by which pesticide immune effects may play a role, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC400418\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">antigen citrullination<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and presentation, autoantibodies production, dysregulated innate and adaptive immune function, and local and systemic inflammation.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Previous research shows that DDT contributes to inflammation and decreases the body\u2019s response to infection, as well as the immunosuppressive effects of malathion and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/lindane\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lindane<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The triazine herbicide metribuzin also has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969721058381\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reported toxicity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> for endocrine and hepatic effects, in addition to impacts on neurological and immune pathways.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cSeveral pesticides associated with RA in this study have been associated with other diseases indicative of immune dysregulation among AHS spouses, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/maneb\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">maneb<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\/<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/mancozeb\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mancozeb<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and metalaxyl with hypo- or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/thyroid-disease\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">hyperthyroid diagnoses<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (mostly autoimmune, i.e., Grave\u2019s or Hashimoto\u2019s disease), and malathion, permethrin\/pyrethroids, and metribuzin (asthma),\u201d the researchers report. (See more information on immune system disorders and autoimmune diseases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/immune-disorders\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/index.php?s=autoimmune\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In finding a greater RA risk in females, this suggests a role of both endogenous (internal) and exogenous (external) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41584-020-0503-4\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">hormonal exposures<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and pathways. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC1524969\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> shows that insecticides, including the organochlorines DDT and lindane and the organophosphates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/carbofuran\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">carbofuran<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and malathion, can impact hormone receptors and affect female reproductive function. Similar findings to the current study, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20740609\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Women\u2019s Health Initiative Observational Study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, also highlight the connection between insecticides and a heightened risk of RA, particularly among post-menopausal women who lived or worked on farms.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Previous Beyond Pesticides <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Daily News<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> coverage, titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2022\/10\/exposure-to-widely-used-bug-sprays-linked-to-rheumatoid-arthritis\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Exposure to Widely Used Bug Sprays Linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, shows that exposure to widely used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/assets\/media\/documents\/mosquito\/documents\/SyntheticPyrethroids.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">synthetic pyrethroids<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, present in many mosquito adulticides and household insecticides like RAID, is associated with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, according to research published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36151437\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Environmental Science and Pollution Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The same pyrethroid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway\/what-is-a-pesticide#:~:text=the%20production%20process.-,Metabolites,-Metabolites%20are%20breakdown\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">metabolite<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> was later found to be associated with increased osteoarthritis risk among U.S. adults, as shared in the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Daily News<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2023\/09\/popular-pyrethroid-insecticides-already-linked-to-rheumatoid-arthritis-associated-with-osteoarthritis\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Popular Pyrethroid Insecticides, Already Linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis, Associated with Osteoarthritis<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In detecting levels of harmful compounds within the body, and connecting the high concentrations to diseases like arthritis, this study is one of many whose findings suggest the importance of an organic diet.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While certain diseases like arthritis have no cure, adopting an organic diet can eliminate exposure to toxic chemicals that increase disease risk. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
