(See research\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0269749118332317\">here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969719341713\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\t<li>\u201cCo-exposure to polyethylene microplastics and glyphosate aggravates neuro-behavioral disorders, intestinal barrier injury, and gut microbiota imbalance.\u201d (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969721077597\">here<\/a>.)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304389425010659\">One study<\/a>\u00a0shows that urea co-exposure increases glyphosate and AMPA residues in soil.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\t<li>\u201c[C]ommercial glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) contain surfactants, such as polyethoxylated tallow amines, which have been shown to amplify the risks associated with glyphosate.\u201d (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0278691519301814\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>However,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/09\/review-of-scientific-literature-finds-all-pesticide-classes-threaten-nontarget-organisms-and-biodiversity\/\">all chemical classes<\/a>\u00a0threaten nontarget organisms and biodiversity. Instead, we must recognize the dangers posed by synthetic petrochemicals\u2014particularly those designed to kill (i.e., \u201c-cides\u201d)\u2014and eliminate dependence on them.<\/p>\r\n<p>Pesticide regulation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the<em>\u00a0Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act<\/em>\u00a0(FIFRA) has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/06\/u-s-policy-allows-cancer-causing-pesticide-use-even-though-it-is-not-needed-to-grow-food-and-manage-land\/\">proved inadequate<\/a>, even in addressing individual pesticides. With\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ota.com\/about-ota\/press-releases\/growth-us-organic-marketplace-accelerated-2024\">U.S. sales of organic products<\/a>\u00a0exceeding $71 billion in 2024 and still growing, consumers are increasingly voicing a preference for avoiding chemical exposures. While consumers can opt for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/02\/study-demonstrates-health-benefits-of-organic-diet-over-that-consumed-with-toxic-pesticides\/\">organic food<\/a>, states and localities tend to defer to EPA&#8217;s judgment in evaluating land management options, resulting in exposure to toxic chemical mixtures in parks, along highways, and in other public places\u2014not only to humans, but to birds, pollinators, and other nontarget organisms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>To assist those engaging with their local elected officials and parks departments, Beyond Pesticides, through its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/power-organic-parks-program\">Parks for a Sustainable Future<\/a>\u00a0program, offers technical support to transition parks to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/lawns-and-landscapes\/overview\">organic land management<\/a>\u00a0through analysis of soil health, development of a plan to improve soil biology to cycle nutrients for healthy plants, training of staff to implement the organic plan, and ongoing consultation for plan evaluation and adjustments when necessary. Organic systems focus on building organic matter and microbial life in the soil to solubilize nutrients for plant uptake, eliminating the use of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides and increasing plant health, soil moisture retention, and resilience.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Through this program and with supporters, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/power-organic-parks-program\">Parks for a Sustainable Future<\/a>\u00a0program, Beyond Pesticides assists local leaders in converting parks and recreational areas exclusively to organic practices. In August, as a part of a nationwide push to stop the use of petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers, the City of Excelsior, Minnesota, joined Kansas City, Missouri, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid=1VLpVWvifO2JOrgxf1-d1DLyDruE&amp;ll=31.054920424687854%2C-112.07887065&amp;z=3\">dozens of communities<\/a>\u00a0across the country to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/08\/city-of-excelsior-partners-with-beyond-pesticides-to-launch-organic-land-management-parks-program\/\">begin its organic transition<\/a>\u00a0of demonstration sites on city park land. In addition, Beyond Pesticides has worked with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid=1VLpVWvifO2JOrgxf1-d1DLyDruE&amp;ll=31.096762987006237%2C-112.02622336662697&amp;z=3\">dozens of communities<\/a>\u00a0to adopt land management policies in jurisdictions of nearly every state in the country. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers run off, finding their way to streams. They also threaten pollinators, who are at risk from multiple threats.\u202f<\/p>\r\n<p>Communities no longer need to figure out how to do this alone. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
