{"id":40269,"date":"2025-11-18T00:01:56","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T05:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=40269"},"modified":"2025-11-17T17:54:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T22:54:11","slug":"research-in-traditional-plant-breeding-in-organic-tomato-traits-critical-to-productivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/11\/research-in-traditional-plant-breeding-in-organic-tomato-traits-critical-to-productivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Research in Traditional Plant Breeding in Organic Tomato Traits Critical to Productivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Beyond Pesticides, November 18, 2025) A study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.hpj.2023.09.009\"><em>Horticultural Plant Journal<\/em><\/a> provides additional evidence on the viability of organically managed farmland based on tomatoes cultivated through traditional plant breeding and regional variances.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the research find that, \u201cDespite the positive trend of the organic sector&#8217;s development in Europe, the number of tomato varieties bred for organic farming is still limited since efforts have been mainly focused on high input conditions.\u201d They continue: \u201cAs a result, the existing cultivars may not suit to organic production [ ] as cultivars chosen for conventional [chemical-intensive] systems often respond well to chemical fertilizers to improve crop output, but they might not maximize nutrient uptake in organic systems where minor external inputs are provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the marketplace is not maximizing the potential productivity of organic systems due to the limited availability of seeds and plant material best suited to conditions in sync with local ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>The designed methodology, as well as the findings, show that there are opportunities for public investment to support systems that cultivate agricultural products without reliance on petrochemical-based fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds treated with pesticide products and other genetically modified characteristics. For millennia, humans have worked in tandem with native plants and locally or regionally cultivated crop species through plant breeding and cultivation, rather than attempting to control what communities can grow or operate on their land. This latest scientific analysis underscores a path forward that is grounded in science, operates within planetary boundaries, and leads to innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional plant breeding is a process of cross-breeding for selected traits, while genetic engineering actually inserts genetic material into the plant. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/advocacy.consumerreports.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Wide-Crosses.pdf\">statement of Michael Hansen<\/a>, PhD., on behalf of Consumers Union.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Legal Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Regulations under the <em>Organic Foods Production Act<\/em> (OFPA) prohibit the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as defined by \u201cexcluded methods\u201d in U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-7\/subtitle-B\/chapter-I\/subchapter-M\/part-205\/subpart-A\/section-205.2\">7 CFR \u00a7205.2<\/a>) and prohibited in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=7+CFR+%C2%A7+205.105%28e%29&amp;rlz=1C1CHBD_enUS1185US1188&amp;oq=where+is+%22excluded+methods%22+in+the+Organic+Foods+Production+Act&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCjEyNDc2ajBqMTWoAgiwAgHxBfL-ZuCEdwUX8QXy_mbghHcFFw&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;mstk=AUtExfBxFWYwo1wNiFHQIfG-28IGdcrDk57maegH85jsotvcluyXtiPWZxQv24F-WuYxE30y1Wj2p06X34G-iyWev9Gt0ZB_QUGo2rYPyQMnI9vXG1p5W2ciUPomYVkDiDLx1BQ&amp;csui=3&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjJ9s3I5--QAxUVGVkFHSvfLbYQgK4QegQIARAB\">7 CFR \u00a7205.105(e)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>OFPA itself specifically establishes a default prohibition of \u201csynthetic\u201d materials in\u00a07 U.S.C. \u00a76502(22), with a definition that prohibits substances that are (i) not created by \u201cnaturally occurring biological processes\u201d or (ii) subject to processes that \u201cchemically changes\u201d a natural material. Allowed and prohibited substances are established in OFPA under the authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/USCODE-2011-title7\/html\/USCODE-2011-title7-chap94.htm\">7 U.S.C. \u00a76517<\/a> (National List) and by statute under the control of the Congressionally mandated National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), a 15-member stakeholder board (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/USCODE-2011-title7\/html\/USCODE-2011-title7-chap94.htm\">7 U.S.C. \u00a76518)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>OFPA provides for broad input from the public under the procedures of the NOSB, requiring that, \u201cThe National List established by the Secretary shall be based upon a proposed national list or proposed amendments to the National List developed by the National Organic Standards Board.\u201d For more on engaging with the process to protect and strengthen organic standards, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/organic-agriculture\/keeping-organic-strong\">Keeping Organic Strong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Background and Methodology<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The researchers tested the interaction of environmental and genotypic effects on 21 \u201cmorpho-agronomic traits\u201d for 39 distinct tomato genotypes (or accessions, which in this context refers to samples of plant\/fruit material representing the selected genotype) grown under certified organic conditions for two years (2019 and 2020) on Italian and Spanish farms. The Italian farm is based in the municipality of Alcasser (ALC), and the Spanish farm is based at the Research Center for Vegetable and Ornamental Crops in Monsampolo del Tronto (MST). The majority of those cultivated tomato types are considered \u201clandraces\u201d (local varieties with minimal human plant breeding) or heirlooms (cultivation of landraces from outside the native region), which are found in Italy or Spain; however, seven are heirlooms cultivated in the United States. Chemical traits for each tomato accession were assayed at laboratory facilities in their respective countries (Milan, Italy, and Barcelona, Spain). For further information on the 21 traits and how they are measured, see section 2.2 <em>Phenotyping measurements<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used a GGE (Genotype plus Genotype by Environment interaction) analysis, rather than the typical analysis of variance (ANOVA) test, because they say, \u201cGGE provides an effective visualization tool to define mean performance and stability of genotypes and to discriminate test environments.\u201d In other words, understanding the impact of genotypic and environmental factors (and their interaction) on crop performance is critical for farmers looking to balance economic competition with ecological regeneration and health.<\/p>\n<p>Using GGE analysis, the researchers identify the highest performing tomato genotypes through assessment of three patterns: \u201cWhich-won-where&#8221; (WWW), \u201cmean performance versus stability\u201d (MPvS), and \u201cdiscriminative versus representative\u201d (DvR).<\/p>\n<p>Genotypes (genetic characteristics) that fall within the WWW pattern (represented as a polygon on the GGE biplot) are considered the best performing phenotypes (traits) within their respective environments. The genotypes are placed along an axis on the GGE biplot that represents \u201ctheir average performance in all environments\u201d; meanwhile, a \u201cperpendicular line separates genotypes with values below average from those with above average values\u201d. The DvR analysis allowed researchers to assess ideal test environments &#8220;where superior genotypes can be effectively selected\u201d based on known data from the two locations and two cultivation seasons. For this analysis, the researchers note \u201cthe implementation of the &#8216;which-won-where&#8217; and &#8216;mean vs. stability&#8217; models in the GGE analysis facilitated the detection of the most promising cultivars in one or more sites determining furthermore their stability level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are based at the Research Centre for Vegetable and Ornamental Crops and Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia. Funding for this project includes grants from the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests. In terms of conflicts of interest, \u201cThe authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Results<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the researchers\u2019 GGE analysis, combining the effects of genotype, location, and seasonal meteorological conditions, the results can be organized based on the three patterns.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of WWW analysis and performance evaluations of specific genotypes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe accessions \u2018Rosada d\u2019Altea\u2019 (G22) and \u2018Edkawi 1987\u2019 (G8) were the best productive during the first season in ALC\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDuring the second season, \u2018Coeur de Boeuf\u2019 (G7) and \u2018Rosa de Barbastro\u2019 (G24) were the most yielding accessions in MST\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAccession \u2018Uco Plata\u2019 (G9) discerned good production and stability during the first season&#8230;in ALC and MST, respectively, whereas \u2018Amarillo bombilla\u2019 (G3) and \u2018ABC potato leaf\u2019 (G34) were seen as least productive accessions across locations\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>\u201c\u2018Amarillo Adem\u00faz\u2019 (G19) and \u2018Flor de Baladre\u2019 (G16) were confirmed as the best accessions for fruit weight, ranking second and third, respectively;\u201d and<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGajo de melon\u2019 (G29) and \u2018Montserrat\u2019 (G1) were the accessions with the biggest diameter of the main root displaying values of 2.42 mm and 2.37 mm, respectively.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In terms of MPvS analysis, the researchers conclude:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cFor fruit weight, the \u2018mean vs. stability\u2019 analysis confirmed \u2018Rosada d\u2019Altea\u2019 (G22), \u2018Amarillo Adem\u00faz\u2019 (G19), and \u2018Flor de Baladre\u2019 (G16) as the best performing accessions\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOn the contrary, \u2018Rosada d\u2019Altea\u2019 (G22) and \u2018Strogili Megali\u2019 (G6) were the best performing cultivars with a low projection with respect to the central axis, thus highlighting stability and ranking consistency\u201d<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;[T]he graph highlighted 17 out of the 39 tested accessions having a fruit weight above average considering the four environments\u201d; and<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOverall, 22 out of the 39 tested accessions had a total production above average considering the four environments.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In terms of DvR analysis to help determine which geographical and meteorological conditions, the researchers conclude:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cALC 2019 is the ideal environment for the selection of superior genotypes [in terms of fruitweight];<\/li>\n<li>\u201c[I]t is possible to consider ALC 2020 as a good environment for selecting best candidates in the case of total yield and diameter of the main root\u201d; and<\/li>\n<li>MST 2019 and 2020 were the least discriminating environments in terms of soluble solids content and diameter of the main root. Soluble solids content is important because it contains essential nutrients plants need to thrive, and the diameter of the main root is a helpful indicator that researchers use to assess plant health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results of the GGEE analysis of U.S. heirloom genotypes varied, with \u2018Black cherry\u2019 (G30) considered to have one of the highest stability in terms of the interaction of\u00a0 \u201cgenotypic and environmental factors influencing performance of crops\u201d\u00a0 and \u2018Gajo de melon\u2019 G29 having the biggest root diameter in the Italian field location and was considered \u201ctop-ranking\u201d for \u201csoluble solid content across all environments\u201d; meanwhile ABC Potato leaf (G34) \u201cshowed the genotype to be \u201clow yielding\u201d and \u201cleast productive\u2026across locations.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Previous Coverage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Research continues to mount on the economic, public health, ecological, and climate-smart benefits of organically managed cropland, seeds, food products, and agricultural systems.<\/p>\n<p>A Spain-based study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.eja.2025.127613\"><em>European Journal of Agronomy<\/em><\/a> finds that \u201corganic farming equals conventional yield under irrigation and enhances seed quality in drought, aiding food security.\u201d The researchers tested twelve common bean genotypes of <em>Phaselous vulgaris L. <\/em>\u201cUnder rainfed conditions, the common bean seeds received only minimal water at the beginning of the season to ensure the seedlings\u2019 survival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1161030125001091?via%3Dihub#tbl0005\"><strong>Table 1<\/strong><\/a>),\u201d say the authors in describing the distinction between the two watering protocols. The study results, when comparing current variable irrigation conditions, conclude that conventional seeds watered through irrigation demonstrate the highest yields and caloric value; however, organic seeds under rainfed conditions promote protein, fiber, and nitrogen fixation. The authors note that the choice of variety (genotype) matters more in organic seeds for efficient use of sunlight through photosynthesis (the underlying biological mechanism that contributes to yield results in plants), suggesting that breeding could potentially offset any category of disadvantage that organic systems may have. (See <em>Daily News <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/08\/study-shows-organic-practices-increase-crop-and-nutritional-quality-with-weather-uncertainty\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Kenya-based study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.eja.2025.127814\"><em>European Journal of Agronomy<\/em><\/a>, based on a 16-year, long-term experiment (LTE), finds that organic crops (cotton production with wheat and soybean rotations) in tropical climates are competitive with chemical-intensive (conventional) systems when evaluating systems\u2019 resilience (to weather and insect resistance), input costs, and profitability. (See <em>Daily News <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/09\/organic-farming-competes-with-chemical-intensive-practices-on-resilience-input-costs-and-profitability\/\">here<\/a>.) This study is an extension of the Rodale Institute\u2019s <em>Farming System Trial<\/em> (FST), a 40-year-long field study published in 2020 with the overarching goal of \u201c[a]ddress[ing] the barriers to the adoption of organic farming by farmers across the country.\u201d (See <em>Daily News <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/05\/organic-grain-systems-lap-chemical-intensive-practices-in-critical-soil-health-markers\/\">here<\/a>.) The FST finds:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Organic systems achieve <strong>3\u20136 times<\/strong> <strong>the profit<\/strong> of conventional production;<\/li>\n<li>Yields for the organic approach are <strong>competitive<\/strong> with those of conventional systems (after a five-year transition period);<\/li>\n<li>Organic yields during stressful drought periods are <strong>40% higher<\/strong> than conventional yields;<\/li>\n<li>Organic systems <strong>leach no toxic compounds<\/strong> into nearby waterways (unlike pesticide-intensive conventional farming);<\/li>\n<li>Organic systems use <strong>45% less energy<\/strong> than conventional systems; and<\/li>\n<li>Organic systems emit <strong>40% less carbon<\/strong> into the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Building on the climate-smart benefits of organic agriculture documented in recent scientific literature, a comprehensive U.S.-based study released in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S095965262301836X\"><strong><em>Journal of Cleaner Production<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in August 2023 identifies the potential for organic farming to mitigate the impacts of agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the fight to address the climate crisis. the viability of organically managed farmland based on tomatoes cultivated through traditional plant breeding and regional variances. The authors of the research find that, \u201cDespite the positive trend of the organic sector&#8217;s development in Europe, the number of tomato varieties bred for organic farming is still limited since efforts have been mainly focused on high input conditions.\u201d They continue: \u201cAs a result, the existing cultivars may not suit to organic production [ ] as cultivars chosen for conventional [chemical-intensive] systems often respond well to chemical fertilizers to improve crop output, but they might not maximize nutrient uptake in organic systems where minor external inputs are provided.\u201d In this context, the marketplace is not maximizing the potential productivity of organic systems due to the limited availability of seeds and plant material best suited to conditions in sync with local ecosystems. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
