(<\/span>Beyond Pesticides<\/span><\/i>, December\u00a012, 2025)\u00a0A study\u00a0concluding that the\u00a0weed killer glyphosate\u00a0did not cause cancer\u00a0was retracted\u00a0last week\u00a0after it was revealed in\u00a0lawsuit documents\u00a0that\u00a0the authors did not\u00a0disclose\u00a0their relationship with Monsanto\/Bayer.\u00a0The editor-and-chief, Martin van den Berg, PhD\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology<\/span><\/i><\/a>, which published the article 25 years ago,\u00a0wrote\u00a0in the journal, \u201cConcerns were raised regarding the authorship of this paper, validity of the research findings in the context of misrepresentation of the contributions by the authors and the study sponsor and potential conflicts of interest of the authors.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study, titled \u201cSafety Evaluation and Risk Assessment of the Herbicide Roundup and Its Active Ingredient, <\/span>Glyphosate<\/span><\/a>, for Humans\u201d and coauthored by three researchers in New York, The Netherlands, and Canada, was\u00a0referred\u00a0to as a \u201cLandmark\u00a0glyphosate\u00a0safety study\u201d in\u00a0a recent article by\u00a0<\/span>U.S. Right to Know<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While this retraction not only sheds light on\u00a0Monsanto\u2019s influence through ghostwriting,\u00a0it\u00a0adds to the wide body of evidence\u00a0regarding\u00a0the\u00a0regulatory\u00a0deficiencies\u00a0currently\u00a0in place. The\u00a0revelation\u00a0is a reminder\u00a0of related incidents\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0Monsanto (Bayer) and other companies have\u00a0wielded excessive influence\u00a0at\u00a0the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), undermining the integrity of the\u00a0science needed to inform\u00a0the\u00a0regulatory decisions that\u00a0safeguard health and the environment.\u00a0(See<\/span>\u00a0Daily News<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Corruption Problems Persist at EPA<\/span><\/a>.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EPA Deficiencies<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the\u00a0initial\u00a0registration process, the\u00a0<\/span>Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(FIFRA) requires that EPA conduct a registration review of all pesticide active ingredients every 15 years.\u00a0As Beyond Pesticides\u00a0<\/span>has stated<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0EPA\u2019s rationale for registration review\u2014that \u2018science is constantly evolving, and new scientific information can come to light at any time and change our understanding of potential effects from pesticides,\u2019\u2014should guide the agency in its decisions, especially when previous decisions have depended on limited actual data, data waiver request rationales, and purported absence of new data or adverse incidents reported.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Beyond Pesticides advocates for allowance of\u00a0substances\u00a0compatible with organic standards that are protective of human health, biodiversity, and healthy ecosystems, it urges EPA to\u00a0establish\u00a0rigorous standards in its registration review of\u00a0all\u00a0materials.\u00a0Currently, there is not only an absence of consideration for alternatives when reviewing pesticide active ingredients but also a lack of full consideration for\u00a0<\/span>endocrine disruption<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>endangered species<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>chemical sensitive<\/span><\/a>\u00a0populations,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cinert\u201d\u00a0ingredients<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0aggregate and cumulative risks, and\u00a0<\/span>synergistic effects<\/span><\/a>, just to name a few.\u00a0(See more on regulatory deficiencies and EPA failures\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scientists and advocates have long asked EPA to evaluate and\u00a0<\/span>regulate full formulations<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of pesticides, and their mixtures, instead of assessing active ingredients singularly. As the body of knowledge base evolves, so\u00a0must\u00a0the systems for assessments that are meant to inform decisions that have a wide impact on human and ecosystem health.\u00a0The complex interactions among pesticide mixtures are not fully understood but represent a significant threat to human health. Recent Glyphosate Study Retraction<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As noted in the\u00a0<\/span>U.S. Right to Know<\/span><\/a>\u00a0article\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>Stacy Malkan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on December 3,\u00a02025, \u201cA scientific study that regulators around the world relied on for decades to justify continued approval of glyphosate was quietly retracted last Friday over serious ethical issues including secret authorship by Monsanto employees\u2014raising questions about the pesticide-approval process in the U.S. and globally.\u201d This study, published in 2000, asserted that the weed killer glyphosate does not pose health risks to humans. Despite a wide body of scientific evidence\u00a0that contradicts this study\u2019s findings, both\u00a0<\/span>EPA and industry pointed to these results<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as further proof that glyphosate should continue to be allowed on the market.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study was revealed as being\u00a0ghostwritten by Monsanto\u00a0employees, with\u00a0the data\u00a0based only on unpublished studies from Monsanto, ignoring\u00a0data from studies\u00a0that more\u00a0thoroughly\u00a0evaluated chronic toxicity and\u00a0carcinogenicity.\u00a0The\u00a0recent\u00a0retraction\u00a0\u201ccame years after internal corporate documents first revealed in 2017 that Monsanto employees were heavily involved in drafting the paper,\u201d which is one of many examples in which\u00a0researchers and journalists\u00a0have exposed\u00a0\u201cthe many ways Monsanto manipulated the scientific record, influenced regulatory agencies, interfered in the peer-review process and used deceptive tactics to shape how regulators and the public view glyphosate,\u201d\u00a0Ms.\u00a0Malkan writes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further coverage by Carey Gilliam in\u00a0<\/span>The New Lede<\/span><\/a>\u00a0calls attention to the issues behind the retracted study.\u00a0As\u00a0the\u00a0article states: \u201cThe listed authors of the paper were three scientists who did not work for Monsanto\u2014Gary Williams,\u00a0[M.D.\u00a0(professor emeritus at New York Medical College),]\u00a0Robert Kroes,\u00a0[PhD,]\u00a0and Ian Munro, [PhD]\u00a0and the paper was touted by the company as a defense against conflicting scientific evidence linking Roundup to cancer. The fact that it was authored by scientists from outside the\u00a0company, from\u00a0seemingly independent\u00a0researchers, gave it added validity.\u00a0But over the last decade, internal company documents that came to light in litigation brought by cancer victims have revealed that the paper actually was a product of three years of what one company official referred to as\u00a0\u2018hard work\u2019\u00a0by several Monsanto scientists who helped craft the paper as part of a strategy Monsanto called\u00a0\u2018Freedom to Operate\u2019\u00a0(FTO).\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Carey Gilliam<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is the is the editor-in-chief of The New Lede, as well as the author of \u201cWhitewash\u2014The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science\u201d that documents Monsanto\u2019s corporate corruption of agriculture. Gillam also spoke at Beyond\u00a0Pesticides\u2019\u00a0<\/span>National Pesticide Forum<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 2018 in which she referred to glyphosate as the poster child for what was wrong with the pesticide registration system, emphasizing that EPA should not only do a better job of risk mitigation but more broadly challenging the dependency on the chemical at all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adverse Effects of Glyphosate<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Beyond Pesticides and other organizations have been\u00a0<\/span>documenting for\u00a0decades<\/span><\/a>, there is a long history of independent, peer-reviewed scientific literature,\u00a0that has not been influenced by industry,\u00a0in which\u00a0deleterious\u00a0effects from glyphosate are noted.\u00a0Just this year, studies have connected glyphosate to\u00a0human health threats including\u00a0<\/span>DNA and cellular damage<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>female reproductive dysfunction<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>kidney injury and cancer<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>blood cancer<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>endocrine disruption<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0among others.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additional\u00a0studies highlight the threats to biodiversity from glyphosate, particularly with\u00a0<\/span>synergistic effects<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>pesticide mixtures<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and to\u00a0<\/span>pollinators<\/span><\/a>, that threaten entire ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span>Scientific literature<\/span><\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0shows that glyphosate products (e.g., Roundup\u2122) are more toxic than glyphosate alone and result in\u00a0a number of\u00a0chronic, developmental, and endocrine-disrupting impacts. The \u201c<\/span>inert<\/span><\/a>\u201d ingredients in Roundup\u2122 formulations kill human cells at\u00a0very low\u00a0concentrations, and some\u00a0glyphosate-based herbicide\u00a0products are genotoxic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ubiquitous nature of glyphosate residues throughout the environment and within organisms is a result of the widespread application of this toxic chemical in forestry, agriculture, landscaping, and gardening.\u00a0Both glyphosate and its main metabolite (breakdown product),\u00a0aminomethylphosphonic\u00a0acid (AMPA), are detected in water, soil, and food, which then represent multiple pathways for exposure to nontarget organisms, including humans.\u00a0Over 750 herbicides\u00a0contain\u00a0glyphosate as the active ingredient, and it also plays\u00a0a large role\u00a0in the production of genetically modified (GM) crops, with\u00a0<\/span>approximately 80%<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0GM\u00a0crops bred specifically for glyphosate tolerance.\u00a0See the\u00a0<\/span>Gateway on Pesticide Hazards and Safe Pest Management<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0additional\u00a0information on glyphosate and other\u00a0pesticide active\u00a0ingredients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Holistic Solution is Urgently Needed<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As shared in previous\u00a0<\/span>Daily News<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Beyond Pesticides and fellow changemakers\u2014including organic and regenerative organic farmers and advocates\u2014have long argued that the failure of EPA to consider the viability, productivity, and profitability of\u00a0<\/span>organic practices<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and product alternatives to conventional pesticides means the agency\u2019s registration and reregistration of toxic pesticides\u00a0have not been subject to a complete assessment. In this context and given the availability of\u00a0less\u00a0and\u00a0nontoxic\u00a0alternatives, EPA has failed in its responsibility to ensure that pesticides registered for use under\u00a0FIFRA\u00a0will not cause unreasonable adverse effects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These inadequacies in the regulation of petrochemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers support the urgent need for the widespread adoption of safer alternatives. The\u00a0holistic approach\u00a0of organic agriculture and land management protects all organisms, including humans, and the environment through the elimination of harmful toxicants and the focus on building soil health. This also mitigates the\u00a0<\/span>current crises<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of biodiversity, public health, and climate change, among other\u00a0<\/span>benefits<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0In focusing on building soil health, that in turn creates a healthy system, with only allowable materials through the\u00a0<\/span>National Organic Standards Board<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(NOSB), the pesticide treadmill can be\u00a0broken, and all workers, consumers, and wildlife can truly be protected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
