These organizations all support global health, and withdrawing from them is \u201ccontrary to the interests of the United States,\u201d especially given the <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2026\/01\/retraction-of-journal-article-on-weed-killer-glyphosate-roundup-safety-sparks-call-for-oversight-hearings\/\">dismantling<\/a> of U.S. environmental and health protections.<\/p>\r\n<p>The January 7 Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/01\/withdrawing-the-united-states-from-international-organizations-conventions-and-treaties-that-are-contrary-to-the-interests-of-the-united-states\/\">memorandum<\/a>\u2014\u201cWithdrawing the United States from International Organizations, Conventions, and Treaties that Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States,\u201d referring to an apparent internal report (not disclosed to the public) from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, finds that, \u201c[I]t is contrary to the interests of the United States to remain a member of, participate in, or otherwise provide support to the [66] organizations. . .\u201d On the same day, Mr. Rubio said in a statement that, \u201cThe Trump Administration has found these institutions to be redundant in their scope, mismanaged, unnecessary, wasteful, poorly run, captured by the interests of actors advancing their own agendas contrary to our own, or a threat to our nation\u2019s sovereignty, freedoms, and general prosperity.\u201d The memorandum points to an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/withdrawing-the-united-states-from-and-ending-funding-to-certain-united-nations-organizations-and-reviewing-united-states-support-to-all-international-organizations\/\">Executive Order 14199<\/a> (February 4, 2025), \u201cWithdrawing the United States from and Ending Funding to Certain United Nations Organizations and Reviewing United States Support to All International Organizations,\u201d which incorporates President Trump\u2019s longstanding attack on the United Nations and many of its programs\u2014discussed in a 2025 opinion piece in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/cebri.org\/revista\/en\/artigo\/214\/the-trump-administrations-retreat-from-the-un#:~:text=The%20second%20Trump%20administration%20has,harm%20to%20the%20world%20organization.\">Brazilian Center for International Relations Journal <\/a><\/em>by Richard Gowan, program director for global issues and institutions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisisgroup.org\/\">International Crisis Group<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fourteen U.S states (and Guam) recognized that dramatic harm to public health will occur with the U.S. withdrawal from WHO and joined together to form the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govsforhealth.org\/\">Governors Public Health Alliance<\/a>, \u201ca new coalition of governors designed to protect the health of people across the U.S.\u201d Beyond Pesticides\u2019 action is calling on the alliance to expand its focus to address biodiversity and climate, since a failure to ensure protection in these areas will certainly undermine public health protection. To this end, the action encourages governors to join with the global community in supporting critical efforts to ensure a united U.S. and worldwide commitment to protecting ecosystems and mitigating climate threats, both essential to life.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/about\">WHO<\/a><\/strong> was established in 1948 as a United Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to prepare for, detect, respond to, and recover from health emergencies, including pandemics, disease outbreaks, natural disasters and humanitarian crises. WHO helps to build global systems that predict, prevent and contain emerging risks; support countries and communities in responding to disease outbreaks, disasters and humanitarian crises; rapidly assess the availability, safety, and efficacy of emergency health products; organize resources and health services for fair global access to vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics and supplies; and support on-the-ground care in fragile settings to protect the most vulnerable. It is financed primarily through contributions from UN member nations. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is an agency of WHO. WHO also houses the Global Outbreak Alert &amp; Response Network (GOARN), which informs departments of public health in states across the U.S. and worldwide of pending health threats.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Since 1948, <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/\"><strong>IUCN<\/strong><\/a> has brought together leaders who set the agenda for global conservation. It possesses an unparalleled network spanning the conservation field. IUCN originates and activates some of the most influential conservation science in the field through commissions&#8211;networks of more than 17,000 scientists, analysts, researchers, experts, advocates, policymakers, and project leaders. In 1972, IUCN became the official advisor on nature under the World Heritage Convention. IUCN motions have resulted in more than 1,450 Resolutions and Recommendations, which serve as the basis for influencing conservation policy at the species, site, national, and global levels. It is not a United Nations body.\u00a0 However, it is an independent intergovernmental body that is open to all member countries of the UN. An important part of the work of IPBES is performing regular and timely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/assessing-knowledge\">assessments of knowledge<\/a> on biodiversity and ecosystem services and their interlinkages, which include comprehensive thematic, global, and regional assessments. To date, 13 IPBES assessments have been completed.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\"><strong>IPCC<\/strong><\/a> is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.
