After DDT was banned, many scientists expected the bald eagle population to recover more quickly, so this study provides some evidence to explain their lackluster rebound. Ms. Venier and her colleagues collected blood samples by climbing trees to access the nests, carrying the nestlings carefully to the ground, and drawing a small blood sample before returning them to their nests.  <\/p>\n<p>The statistically significant relationship between the total PBDE concentrations and total PCB concentrations suggest that these young eagles are ingesting pesticides and flame retardants through their food. Even low levels of these chemicals could be advsersely affecting the eagle population because as co-author of the study, Ronald Hites of Indiana University says, \u201cEagles are very vulnerable to chlorinated compounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chlorinated materials are very persistent and cycle through the soil, air and water for decades. DDT is the most notorious organochlorine pesticide, however several organochlorines are still registered for use, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/pesticide\/lindane.htm\">lindane<\/a> (as a pharmaceutical), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/pesticide\/endosulfan.htm\">endosulfan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/pesticide\/methoxychlor.htm\">methoxychlor<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/pesticide\/dicofol.htm\">dicofol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/pesticide\/penta.htm\">pentachlorophenol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences tells <em><a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/animals\/bald-eagle-pesticides-chemicals.html\">Discovery News<\/a><\/em> that this study helps illustrate why \u201cwe shouldn\u2019t be making chemicals that don\u2019t go away for a long time\u201d because \u201cthere is very little information on their toxicity [which is] a problem with our regulatory system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organochlorine pesticides can cause a multitude of acute and chronic health problems such as tremors, headaches, respiratory problems and seizures, as well as various types of cancer, and endocrine disruption. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
