Mixtures of these compounds can negatively impact the nervous, cardiovascular, immune, and reproductive systems, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/wildlife\/fish\">aquatic organisms<\/a>, and threaten overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/programs\/biodiversity\">biodiversity<\/a>. The review highlights <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/synergistic-effects\/\">synergistic effects<\/a> (greater in combination)\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">observed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemical-mixtures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixtures<\/a>, such as PFAS with<\/span>\u00a0pesticides and microplastics, that can cause enhanced <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/oxidative-stress\/\">oxidative stress<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/tag\/neurotoxicity\/\">neurotoxicity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/developmental-disorders\/\">developmental defects<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/diseasehealth-effects\/reproductive-health\/\">reproductive dysfunction<\/a>, among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/overview\">others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objectives were to evaluate the toxicological effects of mixtures of the selected contaminants with PFAS on aquatic organisms to better understand biological responses in animals,\u201d the study authors explain. \u201cBased on our review, data suggest that PFAS can modify the toxicity of co-occurring pollutants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PFAS were first created in the 1930s and have since been used in many industries and in the production of many products. The multitude of PFAS sources and exposure routes leads to widespread contamination of the environment and organisms. PFAS in agriculture represents a large source, as PFAS can be pesticide active ingredients, used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2022\/09\/epa-confirms-pfas-forever-chemicals-leach-into-pesticides-from-storage-containers\/\">plastic containers that pesticides are stored in<\/a>, and as surfactants in pesticide products. Additionally, PFAS are used in many other plastic storage containers and food packaging, personal care products, nonstick cookware, cleaning supplies, treated clothing, firefighting foam, and machinery and equipment used in manufacturing\u2014all of which <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2023\/03\/pfas-leaches-into-ketchup-mayo-other-common-foods-elevating-health-hazards\/\">contaminate food<\/a>, water, soil, and the air. (See additional coverage on PFAS <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/category\/chemicals\/pfas\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>A previous <em>Daily News<\/em> piece, entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2024\/07\/science-on-forever-chemicals-pfas-as-pesticide-ingredients-and-contaminants-supports-need-for-immediate-action-to-end-their-use\/\">Science on \u2018Forever Chemicals\u2019 (PFAS) as Pesticide Ingredients and Contaminants Documented<\/a>,\u201d shows how and to what extent PFAS can be introduced into pesticide products, and how this impacts health and the environment. The findings are gleaned from public records requests to state and federal agencies in the U. S. and Canada, as well as from publicly accessible databases discussed in the commentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11268133\/\">Forever Pesticides: A Growing Source of PFAS Contamination in the Environment<\/a>.\u201d The classification of PFAS is also of concern, as the number of PFAS in the U.S. heavily depends on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) definition, based on \u201ccase-by-case\u201d rulemakings and agency actions. The broad definition of PFAS as a compound with at least \u201cone fully fluorinated carbon\u201d has been adopted by many states and other authorities.<\/p>\n<p>EPA continues to ignore the widely accepted definition of PFAS, supported by scientists, through the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). EPA\u2019s current scientific definition of PFAS, also known as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d due to their persistence, is at odds with the prevalent scientific thinking of scientists worldwide who have challenged the agency\u2019s position and its resulting risk assessments. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/07\/artificially-narrow-epa-definition-of-pfas-mischaracterizes-widespread-threat-to-health-and-environment\/\">Artificially Narrow EPA Definition of PFAS Mischaracterizes Widespread Threat to Health and Environment<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Widespread Use of PFAS and Resulting Chemical Mixtures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EPA continues to register PFAS pesticides, including the latest instance with the active ingredient tetflupyrolimet (TFP) that was declared as an \u201cemergency.\u201d This emergency, however, is caused by weed resistance, which is a recurring and predictable event. By definition, a chronic and routine problem does not qualify as an emergency. As shared in Beyond Pesticides\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-emergency-exemption-for-tetflupyrolimet-march-2026\">comments<\/a>, the allowance of this emergency use of an unregistered pesticide is not warranted, given the serious concern about the hazards of this herbicide and the lack of a full registration review subject to public comment. According to public health advocates, a wide body of science on the effects of PFAS supports the removal of all PFAS from production, not the approval of a PFAS for emergency use, particularly for a compound that is not registered with EPA for any current uses.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Pesticides has also commented on the increasing number of PFAS pesticide active ingredients proposed for use over the last year. The latest pesticide proposed for EPA registration, <a href=\"https:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-epyrifenacil-december-2025\">epyrifenacil<\/a> (agricultural weed killer), joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-cyclobutrifluram-may-2025\">cyclobutrifluram<\/a> (soil fungicide\/nematicide), <a href=\"http:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-isocycloseram-june-2025\">isocycloseram<\/a> (household and agricultural insecticide), <a href=\"http:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-diflufenican-july-2025\">diflufenican<\/a> (lawn and agricultural weed killer), and <a href=\"https:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-trifludimoxazin-july-2025\">trifludimoxazin<\/a> (agricultural weed killer), making a total of five PFAS pesticide proposals in 2025 that have been associated with national and worldwide contamination of food, land, and water. Two of these, <a href=\"https:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-cyclobutrifluram-tolerances-january-2026\">cyclobutrifluram<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-isocycloseram-tolerances-january-2026\">isocycloseram<\/a>, have been approved as of last fall.<\/p>\n<p>Exposure to PFAS does not occur in isolation, as many compounds are continuously encountered in complex mixtures where the combined effects can differ substantially from those predicted by examining each substance individually. In humans, these compounds can accumulate, referred to as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-induced-diseases-database\/body-burden\">Body Burden<\/a>,\u201d which encompasses numerous chemicals. (See <em>Daily News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2026\/04\/review-identifies-regulatory-deficiencies-in-the-risk-assessments-of-chemical-mixtures-including-pesticides\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Literature Review Methodology and Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the current review, researchers from the U.S. and Brazil performed a literature search for scientific literature published between 2010 and 2025 involving aquatic organisms, such as fish, algae, and microorganisms, with combined exposure to PFAS and other contaminants. \u201cMany studies to date have analyzed the biological impacts of PFAS on invertebrates and vertebrates, such as algae, fish, rodents, and humans,\u201d the authors report. They continue: \u201cSeveral PFAS, including perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), are reported to bioaccumulate within species and can contribute to a wide range of biological and physiological effects (i.e., altered metabolism, endocrine disruption, oxidative stress, reproduction disruption).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additional results include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=17\">Chlorpyrifos<\/a> and the PFAS perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) exhibit synergistic effects by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulating neurotoxicity-related genes in zebrafish.<\/li>\n<li>PFOA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/resources\/pesticide-gateway?pesticideid=7\">atrazine<\/a> show synergy as the mixture increases the presence of malformations and oxidative stress. These compounds also cause decreased embryo hatchability in zebrafish. (See research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0045653524009731\">here<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>PFAS combined with microplastics also intensifies oxidative stress, as well as other developmental and reproductive effects.<\/li>\n<li>Zebrafish with coexposure to chlorpyrifos and PFAS experience neurotoxicity and oxidative stress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In summary, the researchers say: \u201cThe coexistence of PFAS and other contaminants in environmental matrices is a reality, raising concerns about ecological and health risks. In vivo and in vitro studies in several aquatic organisms indicate that co-exposure can exacerbate toxicity, leading to a higher incidence of malformations, inhibition of hatching, increased oxidative stress, and alterations in metabolism and gene expression.\u201d This review highlights the complexities of the interactions between PFAS and other environmental contaminants, further supporting the need to eliminate the use of these chemicals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As shared in additional comments to EPA regarding PFAS contamination (see <a href=\"https:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-pfas-tsca-december-2025\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bp-dc.org\/bp-comments-on-pfas-december-2024\">here<\/a>), there is a wide body of science highlighting the adverse effects of these compounds on human and environmental health. Additionally, of serious concern are the many PFAS known to break down in the environment to other compounds such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), which is noted as one of the most pervasive PFAS water contaminants in the world and is the most extensively studied ultrashort-chain perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA).<\/p>\n<p>PFAS residues are pervasive in food and drinking water, with over six million U.S. residents regularly\u00a0exposed to\u00a0drinking water with\u00a0PFAS levels\u00a0above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2022-01\/dwtable2018.pdf\">EPA health advisory<\/a> of 70 ng\/L.\u00a0PFAS are detectable in\u00a0almost all\u00a0of the U.S. population\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10233791\/\">disproportionately afflicting people of color communities<\/a>\u2014and have implications for human health.\u00a0From\u00a0epigenetic\u00a0to\u00a0immunotoxic\u00a0effects, there is a wide range of health implications with PFAS exposure.\u00a0Because of their ubiquitous use and exposure,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/ToxProfiles\/tp200-c2.pdf\">studies<\/a>\u00a0report that PFAS compounds are detectable in infants, children, and pregnant women.\u00a0Like other legacy chemicals, the effects of PFAS endure through generations\u2014pregnant women can readily transfer compounds to the developing fetus through the placenta.<\/p>\n<p>The detection of any level of PFAS is cause\u00a0for\u00a0concern. From widespread presence in farm fields and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/10\/studies-confirm-contaminants-including-pfas-in-biosolids-sewage-sludge-subject-of-lawsuits\/\">sewage sludge<\/a> (biosolids) to contaminated water bodies throughout the U.S., PFAS have made their way into the environment and human bodies. PFAS are even present in remote environments like the Arctic, Antarctica, and Eastern European Tibetan Plateau. Numerous studies document exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/2025\/01\/multitude-of-studies-find-epigenetic-effects-from-pfas-and-other-endocrine-disrupting-pesticides\/\">endocrine-disrupting pesticides<\/a> (EDPs), including PFAS, leading to dysfunction of the body\u2019s endocrine system as well as additional health effects, such as cancer, brain and nervous system disorders, immune system disorders, diabetes, learning\/developmental impacts, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p>PFAS contamination is much more pervasive than previously assumed, polluting storage and transportation containers, food and water resources, and other chemical products. Not only is the public exposed to PFAS, but cumulative exposure is higher among workers, including those who work in factories that manufacture products with PFAS, and workers who use them regularly. As science continues to emerge on the enhanced effects of PFAS when combined with other contaminants, protecting health and the environment becomes increasingly important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Organic Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To avoid the use of these harmful chemicals, Beyond Pesticides recommends choosing certified organic products whenever possible. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
