One of the critical issues before the NOSB is plastic microencapsulated insect attractants with pear ester. A blue cluster focused on organism-level toxicology (exposure, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, biomarkers); a green cluster focused on microbial/plastic dynamics; a yellow cluster focused on sorption and material properties (adsorption capacity, polyethylene, polystyrene, hydrogen bonding), and; a red cluster focused on mitigation and management (removal, efficiency, advanced oxidation, water purification, and public policy). According to the authors, microplastics and pesticides are the most studied pairing, followed by pathogens, heatwaves, and pharmaceuticals, in descending order.

The main findings can be broken down by the four environmental stressors, as well as significant research gaps that affect public policy and regulatory scope.

Shared Mechanisms of Concern. Researchers reflect on the preponderance of scientific literature gathered for this study and distill four shared mechanisms linked across all stressor combinations. Oxidative stress, altered bioavailability, microbiome disruption (particularly in nitrogen-cycling microbial life in the soil), and the risk of microplastics and vectors for nonlinear context-dependent toxicity (reflecting multi-variable interactions).

Heatwaves and Microplastics. Increased temperatures accelerate the degradation process of plastics, in turn generating smaller micro- and nano-plastic particles with greater bioavailability and increased uptake. There are numerous examples of synergies between heatwaves and plastics in terms of deleterious impacts, including on Pacific oysters (reduced survival and immune disruption due to “polyethene MPs and higher seawater temperatures”), rice (yield loss and disruption to Nitrogen cycling associated with loss in nutritional value), and river microbial communities (impaired carbon metabolism and elevated C02 emissions).

Pesticides and Microplastics. The researchers note that microplastics serve as both a pesticide carrier and sink. Microplastics have also been found to release pesticides as a secondary source. There are numerous synergistic/additive effects, including stronger genotoxicity in Ceriodaphnia dubia (see here), oxidative and metabolic disruption in zebrafish with penthiopyrad (see here), and immune damage in carp with emamectin benzoate. (See here.)

Pharmaceuticals and Plastics. Microplastics serve as vectors for potential pharmaceutical sorption, including enhanced and reduced effects. For example, naproxen bioavailability increased in earthworms exposed to contaminated microplastics (see here), intensification and persistence of behavioral effects from diazepam exposure (see here), and doxycycline toxicity elevated to microalgae. (See here.)

Pathogens and Plastics. In their degradation, microplastics develop a biofilm (referred to as a “plastisphere”) that can concentrate opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and zoonotic protozoa. The research is underexplored but raises an additional layer of concern. Oysters exposed to microplastics and protozoan oocysts (e.g., the single-celled Cyclospora, which is currently in the news because of a serious foodborne outbreak) accumulated significantly more pathogens than with protozoa in isolation. Researchers suggest that microplastics “may facilitate pathogen contamination in shellfish and increase risks to wildlife and human health.” (See here.)

Major Gaps to Assess Multiple Stressors and Plastics. The core research gap is that there is no identifiable published research as part of this study that tests three or more stressors together, which should be considered a serious blind spot not only in the academic literature but in the regulatory and economic systems more broadly and a deficiency in assessing the “true” cost of chemical and plastic dependency.

Previous Coverage

Research continues to uncover complexities and serious adverse effects of chemical-intensive practices in land and agricultural management, especially their contribution to biodiversity decline, public health threats, and the climate crisis. At the same time, there is significant evidence—borne out by thousands of years of human civilization that farmed without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers—on the viability and necessity of transitioning to organic agriculture.

A literature review of over 90 scientific articles in Agriculture documents microplastics’ (MPs) increase in the bioavailability, persistence, and toxicity of pesticides used in agriculture. The interactions between MPs and pesticides enhance the threat of pesticide exposure to nontarget organisms, perpetuate the cycle of toxic chemical use, and decrease soil health that is vital for productivity. “The increasing presence of MPs in agricultural ecosystems has raised concerns about their impact on pesticide bioavailability, efficacy, and environmental behavior,” says study author Kuok Ho Daniel Tang, PhD, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona. (See Daily News here.) The combined toxicity of microplastics and pesticides is greater than the sum of two individual exposures. A study published in Ecotoxicology demonstrates the adverse impacts of MPs and chlorpyrifos (CPF), a widely used organophosphate insecticide, on cladocerans, a group of microcrustaceans. An analysis of scientific literature on pesticide contamination in infant formula reveals a food safety issue for young children with potential lifelong impacts, as published in Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology. Through a systematic review of research from 1975 to 2025, the authors at the Department of Public Health and Infectious Diseases at the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) find residues of pesticides that are linked to deleterious health impacts in infant formula, including insecticides such as organochlorines, organophosphates, pyrethroids, and neonicotinoids, and many herbicides. (See Daily News here.) A peer-reviewed article, published in Scientific Reports, links exposure to pesticide mixtures and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) prevalence at the county-level across the United States. Alzheimer’s, a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior, accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases. The strongest positive associations, where AD prevalence increases as pesticide exposure increases, are “observed for a soil fumigation/nematicide system, an herbicide-dominant vegetation control regime, and a neuroactive insecticide system,” the authors note. These findings link pesticide mixtures to increased AD rates. the transition to a world free of toxic pesticides. The founders, who established Beyond Pesticides (originally as National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides) as a nonprofit membership organization in 1981, felt that without the existence of such an organized, national network, local, state and national pesticide policy would become, under chemical industry pressure, increasingly unresponsive to public health and environmental concerns. Beyond Pesticides believes that people must have a voice in decisions that affect them directly. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Learn more about our work, read A Year in Review—2021, our accomplishments are your victories! Beyond Pesticides seeks to protect healthy air, water, land, and food for ourselves and future generations. By forging ties with governments, nonprofits, and people who rely on these natural resources, we reduce the need for unnecessary pesticide use and protect public health and the environment. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
