Over the course of the 12-year study, ADHD rose from 5.7% to 7.6%, and the rate of autism went from 0.2% to 0.7%.<\/p>\n<p>This adds to the growing database of studies that show our current approach to restricting pesticide use through risk assessment-based mitigation measures is not working. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s (EPA) risk assessment fails to look at chemical mixtures, synergistic effects, certain health endpoints (such as endocrine disruption), disproportionate effects to vulnerable population groups, and regular noncompliance with product label directions.<\/p>\n<p>Emerging science demonstrates that the amount of toxic chemicals in the environment that cause developmental and neurological damage are contributing to the rise of physical and mental effects being found in children. Regulatory restrictions must be tied to alternatives assessment that move chemicals off the market or prohibit their marketing as safer approaches and technologies emerge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=5228\">Earlier this month<\/a>, a study published in <em>Health Affairs<\/em> journal found that environmental disease in children costs around $76.6 billion in 2008. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=5300\">Three independent studies<\/a> published in<em> Environmental Health Studies<\/em> last month found that prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides is linked to IQ deficits in school-aged children.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Beyond Pesticides launched the <em>Pesticide-Induced Diseases Database<\/em> to capture the range of diseases linked to pesticides through epidemiologic studies. The database, which currently contains 383 entries of epidemiologic and laboratory exposure studies, will be continually updated to track the emerging findings and trends. Beyond Pesticides believes that people must have a voice in decisions that affect them directly. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
