They just really want you to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farm work is demanding and dangerous physical labor. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=986\">2008 study<\/a> by a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researcher finds that the incidence rate of pesticide poisoning is extremely high among U.S. agricultural workers. Young farmworkers and children of farmworkers are especially at risk. Children are much more vulnerable than adults to the injuries and illnesses brought on by this type of work. Due to children\u2019s higher rate of metabolism, they take in more pesticides per unit weight than adults, and their developing organ systems are more sensitive to the effects of pesticides. <\/p>\n<p><em>Overworked &#038; Under Spray<\/em> was produced through Toxic Free NC&#8217;s Farm Worker Documentary Project, which is in its fourth year. Toxic Free NC is a Raleigh-based nonprofit that works statewide to reduce pesticide pollution through grassroots organizing and policy reform. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing these kinds of stories from youth is especially compelling, because we know that exposure to pesticides can have an even more profound health impact on a child than it can on an adult,\u201d said Toxic Free NC Executive Director Fawn Pattison. \u201cIt is our hope that by getting these stories out there, we can urge the state to do a better job of enforcing its pesticide laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While we work to strengthen our state and national laws, consumers can also make a difference at the grocery store or farmers market. Our food choices have a direct effect on those who grow and harvest what we eat around the world. This is why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/organicfood\/index.htm\">food labeled organic<\/a> is the right choice. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
