The study confirms the high toxic activity of the chemical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/gateway\/pesticide\/piperonyl.htm\">piperonyl butoxide<\/a> (PBO), a chemical \u201csynergist\u201d used to increase the potency of more than 700 insecticides, including synthetic pyrethroids widely used in mosquito and community spray programs and for home use. The study, entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22552772\">The Insecticide Synergist Piperonyl Butoxide Inhibits Hedgehog Signaling: Assessing Chemical Risks<\/a>,\u201d was published in the May 2012 edition of the journal <em>Toxicological Sciences<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>The testing shows that PBO disrupts a biological signaling system that is \u201ccritical in neurological development,\u201d the researchers reported in the abstract of their paper. The study finds that the disruption of this critical pathway \u201cmay be the molecular basis for profound developmental defects in children exposed in utero to PBO.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Piperonyl butoxide is not itself classified as a pesticide, but companies combine it with insecticides to increase their potency. PBO came into widespread use when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) phased out chlorpyrifos and other organophosphate pesticides nearly a decade ago after determining that they posed a risk to children\u2019s health. As with many so-called \u201cinert\u201d ingredients, pesticide products often contain five to ten times more PBO than the active ingredient in the formulation. PBO is listed among the top 10 chemicals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=1906\">detected in indoor dust<\/a>, often a significant route of exposure to children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were concerned when our study confirmed that PBO disrupted neurological development pathways \u2014 especially given the widespread use of this chemical in American homes,\u201d said Wei Chen, PhD, assistant professor at the Duke School of Medicine and an author of the new study. \u201cOur study demonstrates the need for additional research and evaluation of the safety profile of PBO as a pesticide synergist and the value of high- throughput screening in assessing the potential toxicity of chemicals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/dailynewsblog\/?p=4912\">published last year<\/a> in the journal <em>Pediatrics<\/em> shows that children exposed to higher amounts of pyrethroid insecticides and PBO are three times as likely to have a mental delay compared to children with lower levels. The study, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/peds.2010-0133v1\">Impact of Prenatal Exposure to Piperonyl Butoxide and Permethrin on 36-Month Neurodevelopment<\/a>,\u201d measured exposure to pesticides using maternal and umbilical cord plasma samples and in personal air samples, collected using backpack air monitors during pregnancy. Children were then tested for cognitive and motor development at three years of age. We believe decisions should not be made for us by chemical companies or by decision-makers who either do not have all of the facts or refuse to consider them. Beyond Pesticides provides hands-on services to the public and supports local action by: identifying and interpreting hazards; and, designing safe pest management programs. With the information provided by Beyond Pesticides, people may not only be able to make informed choices and adopt practices that protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides, but they will be able to effect changes on community-wide pest management decisions and policies that govern pesticide use, such as pesticide uses in parks, schools, for community insect control and along roadsides.
